The game has been a lot of fun. Couple errands to do, then hopefully I can finish off (single player, nornal) Diablo.
A question for vets of the series: What are the biggest changes between the original and Diablo 2? From reading a few game accounts online, a few things that seem new/different:
- Magic books and slvl system replaced with actual skill trees
- Mob leaders (not sure of the proper term, but semi-randomized pack leaders) become much more important
- More open exploration (I think?)
- Concept of sockets on items added, along with new classes of objects to go in the sockets
What else changed in D2?

Nicely done there. Allows highly customized builds, makes characters more personal.

LEB and FEB -
Lightning Enchanted Boss sparks deadly Charged Bolts when hit
Fire Enchanted Boss can one hit kill a strong healthy hardcore toon when it dies with its Fire Explosion. IIRC, I quit hardcore a couple of times over that bug

A bigger game, and lots of outdoor maps. BTW, you "have to" get D2 and it's expansion LoD "Lord Of Destruction" together.

Much fun and customization to be had. Great feature!

Pathing (both monsters and projectiles like arrows and spells) is much much better allowing for far more variation in enemies and abilities.
Skills plus gems plus runes plus set items (in addition to magic items, rare items with more than 2 keywords, and uniques items) gives far far more diversity in abilities.
More levels gives more granularity in item power and skill power.
The combination of all of these gives far more variance in power from a brand new character to a level 80+ ultra optimized character.
Between the variance in player power, and the variance in monster power, and the sheer increased number of possibilities of everything, I find d2 will generally bore you before you run out of replay options, because at the end of the day, no matter how pretty or awesome or varied the special effects are, the gameplay is the same as hack or castle of the winds. D1 on the other hand you tend to get bored because you've mastered your playstyle and there isn't much left to experience.

Thanks for the info, KoP and Nelphine.
It sounds like D2 allows for much more variation and customization of characters than D1. Differences in skills chosen, equipment found, the greater range of possibilities in equipment all give a greater range of variation. Improvements on the already very entertaining original.

After some more fighting on level 16 as my rogue worked the various skull levers and cleared out all the minions, finally she came face to face with Diablo. That ranged attack (apocalypse, I think?) was painful, but once the first arrow hit Diablo was continuously locked until he died. Kind of an anti-climax, actually. I had a whole belt of full rejuv potions and never needed a single one. This is only single player normal mode, but I was expecting something a bit nastier.
Interesting cinematic at the end -- I guess this is set up for Diablo 2?

My rogue was clvl 26 for the Diablo fight. DEX was 170-something with equipment, base to-hit just over 200%, bow damage in mid to upper 30s. Apparently this is enough to stun lock Diablo in single player, since he has a monster level of 30. I was not expecting that, so other than a couple apocalypse hits before I landed the first arrow he never got a hit in.

Hehe, you talk like you've been reading the bible
Yea, it can be anticlimactic but the player has the ultimate control of the balance between fun and challenge. So go face Diablo under leveled if you crave more challenges. Or, play a variant!
So glad you enjoyed the game. Yup, the story continues....
Diablo 1 shines in the precise control the player has over every single steps and attacks, the tactile feel, and the haunting atmosphere. Diablo 2 loses some of those quality but still offers a great game that elevates the franchise to new heights. GO East!

The bible is certainly useful for understanding what is going on in the game. There are tons of things that are not at all obvious at first (or second, or third) glance.
I was not expecting Diablo to be such a pushover. I was all geared up for a huge fight, loaded with rejuves, ready to portal out if I had to escape. And then he just...died.
I expect I will return to Diablo 1 at some point and play a sorceror to see what that is like. But after two full runs through the labyrinth with my rogue, plus some warrior time, I think a move to Diablo 2 is the next step. I don't think I could face another run through the cathedral and catacombs for a while.
