mackoti offers iron. He sees the GJ danger for the overall game (which somehow Gavagai doesn't see, or maybe he has a plan ?).

Gawdzak has paper, he has a lot of techs. The two techs he can research you can't see on the picture are construction (at this stage ? wow, it's the benefit of having a huge island to yourself) and gunpowder. He'll get liberalism no doubt (except if Plako dtay or Commodore are also going for it).

GJ is going after banking. Surely not for mercantilism, I guess he wants to have his economy in good shape so it doesn't sink when he start paying the maintenance of our cities.

GJ is going after Civil Service and still doesn't have any courthouse according to the espionage graph. Not much happening except we're never going to get to engineering before he launches an attack on us with knights (unless that's not what he wants to do, but I'm pretty sure that's his plan). He's now second in score.

We got a quest that's not completely unattainable. Not sure we want to steer towards that (it just gives c1 to all triremes) but worth mentioning anyway.

It's funny how Gawdzak dtay and GJ are definitely in front in score. I definitely wouldn't have bet on them in the first place.

I think this doesn't quite explain fully - boats can use any fort or city adjacent to water (lake or sea) that is inside your culture (even on hills). The upshot being that you can't canal through a three-tile wide bit of land.

Do I smell a tier list?

Almost. Mostly due to my following closely PB13 where different people's tier list ended up close to the mark, I started thinking of those as set in stone. But I'm too new to the forum to have an opinion on everyone (especially the new guys) as was obvious by my opponent analysis at the beginning.

Wow Gawdzek is rather running away with things... But then again his traits fitted his start perfectly. An isolated start which he could settle rapidly with imp and organised for lower costs of settling it, plus then being able to convert those extra cities to be more profitable than usual with the GLH. A pretty solid start that suited him perfectly. It's gonna be hard to hit him until the era of transports. Then it depends on how people can play the naval game, which is rather different to a land game. Can he get enough troops onto the mainland which we seem to be on to convert his advantage long term? I think he probably can.

Isn't this version with the mercentalism change? Or is that the nextversion? I get so confused... But he has extra TRs anyway so I agree that merc will be painful for him to get. Can't see the use of it myself either but I am sure that it makes sense really. Also I guess GJ doesn't need courthouses as such atm with the cheap extra trade routes from the cothons.

You sure there is no way we can get enginneering beforehand? It will take him a few turns to build knights. We can hopefully have a few ready. I think it is the best way to keep him from taking us out so easily. Or finding ourselves another source of ivory. At least with the iron from mack we can not have to settle any garbage cities for iron... We should hopefully be able to survive for a while in the northern reaches too. Be a real annoyance wink

Yeah I agree the quest would be a bit silly to chase, not the most useful of quests as they go. I would laugh if GJ got the bonus gold habour quest :P I'll look in later and see if there is anything I can add but I think you're doing a pretty ace job whilst I am rather tied up atm. Well done! Lets give GJ an awkward conquest! smile

We don't know where Plako is but one of Gawdzak's advantage for the next 50-100 turns is that he doesn't have any direct neighbor to even imagine going through with a galleon strike. If Furungy's vikings or Commodore's Dutch had been a little closer they would've had an interesting opportunity.
Mercantilism is 1 free spec and no foreign TR.

We're getting engineering t145 at the earliest by my estimates. I'm all for optimism but GJ will be on our doorstep by then most likely, and we'll need to save gold to upgrade the spearmen. Also remember that our culture is growing into the ice iron in like 5t, soon we won't need mackoti's support.

The problem I see now is that we've more or less hit our growth cap (at least concerning good tiles, there are still coast tiles and plains workshops we can grow into), and the only land left is the north which is going to be slow to develop. The city with the most room for progress is MCG with lots of cottages to grow but it's going to be in the warzone as soon as the war begins.

Edit : I put a scientist in EA, if we push in a second one we could get a GS out for a GA or an academy, which could speed up engineering. Not sure if we actually win anything but it's worth a try, a GA is good either way.

5t to engineering, so t144. We finally have dreylin's graphs, their power is high but no recent spike so I don't think we're in for a full scale backstab on their part. They've had a weird spike in EP recently, probably an event. We're 2EP from seing Gavagai's graphs and 12 from HAK's so I've put it 2/2 on them for now.

Engineering in 4, no sign of GJ at the border, it's a pretty good sign. What do you think is best next ? We'll have our own iron at the same time. It's either guilds for our own knights, CS with or without COL. A detour via alphabet for OBs or meditation/priesthood for temples and monasteries is possible and cheap. Im torn apart because CS means access to education for our UB, but without guilds we might not survive that far.

There's a GS coming in 3 turns, should we use him on an academy (20bpt in the cap currently), a GA or a bulb ? Currently a scientist bulbs us Alphabet, then compass, then aesthetics then engineering then meditation then theology. But if we get CS and alphabet it bulbs Paper for us. If paper is done then it's education before anything else.

Foreign news : HAK built Chichen Itza last turn, and Gavagai attacked him this turn, getting a great general out of it. Lots of stuff happening everywhere it seems. I also made a map exchange with Furungy last turn hoping to get Plako's location, but no luck. Only interesting info is that GJ and Furungy did fight their war :

mackoti ganged up on HAK, but HAK got a GG this turn too in the counterattack. He's probably dead meat though. Especially looking at Gavagai's power graph.
