[SPOILERS - PBEM17] novice and spaceman - Suryavarman of India

Well, whaddya know, the save is in.

Now then, is this the one where we shouldn't have been shafted but have been, or should have been shafted but haven't been...?

Right, then. Where are we up to? I think it's time for a recap.

Here are the civics we are running for the duration of the golden age.

It has resulted in impressive GNP. Our crop yield still lags, although that's inevitable with our specialist economy. Darrell and, presumably, Kyan are way out in front on crop yield. (We are 2 turns or so from seeing Kyan's graphs.)

I check power briefly, but nothing alarming yet - it's Shoot first, us second.

City count

Us: 13 (2 settlers en route)
Kyan: 16
Rego: 13
Darrell: 15
Shoot: 9

Some city views. First up, our Moai city, looking very nice indeed during the Golden Age as I put it on max growth for the time being. I also set it building a barracks, with the plan to build some promoted longbows.

Our first island city also needs growing, and my plan is to churn out some promoted longbows to support the Moai city production. Our peace treaties run out soon so we should be wary.

The capital is looking good in a bureaucratic golden age. It's going to build some missionaries for the time being.

Because our religious spread is poor.

Quick shot of the NW. Gold Rush works on churning out fast workers to irrigate the land.

I'll hold fire on sending the save on for the time being in case you have any comments.

EDIT: I've sent it now.

Idle chat with darrell, which I will tidy up later.

13:06 me: afternoon

who was your tech issues comment directed at?

Darrell: yo

me: (out of curiosity)

13:07 Darrell: you of course

me: oh

Darrell: golden age and all those ice civics

and the 350 GNP

me: don't start this again...

Darrell: I was so tempted to post in the UN thread "Maybe we shoudl all DoW on them to see if we can slow them down"

But then I figured people migth take me seriously

me: yeah

well it did last time

13:08 when krill posted it really early on

Darrell: yeah, I remember his post

He'd been advocating that for some time I was a bit surprised when he posted it

me: i triggered the golden age last turn, so that's why i was slightly confused about your comment

Darrell: Oh

I missed it somehow

I saw it this turn when the GNP went silly

me: well you are after us

Darrell: It might have been silly last turn

13:09 me: sorry

Darrell: oh yeah

me: we are after you

so it was the first time you will have seen it

Darrell: right right

so how many turns until Machinery?

me: so there was nothing new - i was expecting a wonder completion or something

Darrell: I figured this was coming hence the Fuedalism beeline

13:10 I will be curious to see what happens over your Iron source, if anything

me: we fear our safety, hence longbows

Darrell: something like that

No, your MoM build is still safe

13:11 me: errr... the wonder?

Darrell: Yes

No need to confirm or deny smile

me: well, we've just popped a golden age

Darrell: I understand

13:12 me: not sure MoM is really that much use any more

Darrell: but If I feel I'm in a race for the wonder, and I have all thse nice civics like Big B

I do it anyway

you are on your 3rd great person?

and in caste system for a few more I reckon

well at least one more

me: let me count

death - golden age - ?

Darrell: I bet you have 3 golden ages left in you if Nationalism is included

profit

alwasy profit

me: haha

13:14 so amidst all this crazy diplo, have you managed to do any of your planned messing with rego's mind?

13:15 Darrell: Indeed I have not

He is actually messing with me

He wanted to buy a workboat

so I said sure, 2:1 hammer:gold

which is of course backwards

so he offered 10 gold in game

me: heh

Darrell: meanwhile my workboat coudl be scouting his lands but is instead just sitting around

every time I bring it up he just makes a joke

13:16 so I think I need to just walk away smile

I did make him believe I was prioritizing a tundra island with marlbe and nada mas

me: nada mas

?

Darrell: nothing more

me: ah

13:17 Darrell: I thought norwegians spoke all the languages of europe :P

me: heh

was about to say: "well, don't know where novice is - guess i will send on the save"

Darrell: Damn it!

Stop messing with my head smile

me: this is why i don't know the answer to anything...

13:18 Darrell: I'll believe that when my GNP passes yours

me: golden ages are very short on quick speed

Darrell: my GNP isn't passing yours when your GA ends

me: no

but one can dream

Darrell: I supposed you coudl run all cash, and I could research a tech with 1.6 multiplier, and then I could get close

13:19 me: yeah

and you have a squillion cities with a massive crop yield

Darrell: massive?

I'm not even first

it goes well with last in production and GNP

give or take

me: prioritising food

13:20 the graphs make your crop yield look good

Darrell: its coming around

me: we can't quite see kyan's yet

Darrell: frankly we've been whippping for so long, its feels a bit odd to hold off

his is #1 I think

me: but he's been top for ages

Darrell: he has a ton of food resouces

yeah

I have Fish envy

me: i hate when i'm not in slavery and go to whip and think "what the...?"

13:21 Darrell: I'm sure you will be back in slavery when the GA is over

me: that's weekly turns for you

Darrell: how else can you whip all those maces?

me: well we have to - if we had NAPs and this then maybe not

*shit

Darrell: I thought it was shite?

me: it's either

Darrell: Good to know smile

me: if you're in the north of england anyway

13:22 you can string em together too

shitting shit it

which is an expression of frustration

Darrell: I was in england for about 4 months during college

good times

great pubs

me: heh

13:23 anyway, no point whipping maces if as soon we declare war on anyone, we get three additional war decs

Darrell: that's probably quite true

I am sure clever fellows like yourselves can figure out how to avoid that

me: some for home defence, sure

13:24 but otherwise our hands are tied

Darrell: you are going Krill styel and wiating for a two generation tech lead :P

me: well that would be nice, but i don't think we are that far ahead

our economy crashed after the original war decs

Darrell: uh-huh

13:25 (that was sarcastic disbelief)

me: i got it

well, believe what you like, but we've not been much above 20% research

granted, we have specialists

i guess it's all relative

Darrell: 6 beaker specialists!

yeah

our economy semi-crashed when we dropped our last round of cities

me: we'd be on industrialism by now if it weren't for you...

13:26 Darrell: I honestly believe you

me: haha

Darrell: with the GM cash and all those trade routes and everythign else, I honestly believ eyou

you would have lib slinged industrialism

smile

me: well maybe not that far, but we were tearing it up

Darrell: or at least an industrial tech

yeah

the thing we should have done is just said "gg, let's reboot and try again"

me: pity really - would have been fun to see what could have been achieved

how to break the game

13:27 Darrell: Yeah

you aren't in a game iwth players that are going to do that...and I don't mean the dogpile I just mean we would have given up and tried to play again so we could win

it was just so obvious the game was over...the right thing would have been to abandon it and try again

13:28 and ban all the things that gave you an advantage so you'd have to find new ways to break teh game :P

me: you'll enjoy reading the start of our thread where novice makes a case for our leader/civ combo being the weakest of the five

Darrell: I had the worst combo by far

for the early game at least

13:29 and it is obvious now that in this caliber of game there isn't time to wait around for my advantages to kick in

well, probably

BTW, it IS the worst if it is played poorly

you had to get tGL at a minimum, which you did

and then beating rego to the pyramids was just brutal

me: heh, by how many turns?

Darrell: he would not say

13:30 his only observation was "that was pretty early for the pyramdis"

me: i remember you thinking we were going for one of HG and mids

Darrell: I was 95% sure it was mids, I believe I told you guys that?

It made the most sense by far

Well not by far

But it made the most sense

me: hmm, would have to dig out the chat

Darrell: HG was a five horse race, but the mids was only a two horse race

me: which i can't be bothered doing

Darrell: that alone is a good enough reason

13:31 I posted it in my thread, which is not useable

too many posts to wade through

13:32 ah well, I have to run

talk to you later...

me: ciao

Looking good. Our newest city needs a name. It's on a tundra island with clams and furs. Any suggestions, lurkers?
