I'd have to actually do mathematics to be sure, but with (I think) a smaller average game size these days and SD playing in every game, it might be an anomaly to not have him as your neighbour.

3 games played with superdeath in them, 4 dedlurked, and as far as I remember never had him for a close neighbour smug ( and only on pb49 we had even as much as a short border)

Yeah, odds are very good that he is a neighbor when there are only 6 players. On a toroid it isn't that hard to have 4 neighbors.

It's still too early to say how close he is to us. I met Cornflakes first in 63 but he was not my closest neighbor. And in 52 it was Gira that was my closest neighbor, but Superdeath was a close second since the map only let him go in one direction: towards me. Really, as long as the map doesn't encourage superdeath to super kill me for a 3rd time I'll be happy wherever he is.

Do we settle 1st settler before we have BW? Btw, if you would prefer me to be more involved dedlurker we can start discord or something about the game?

Getting wheel first means settling before BW comes in. I'm not too concerned even with superdeath showing up because he has a very slow starting combination, and because with IMP I think we'll easily pick up copper with the 3rd city

Oh and I appreciate whatever level of contribution you feel comfortable giving. I'm not holding up decisions for input but it definitely feels like an asset having you on my side!

Sorry for taking over your thread, vanrober. But all these trade route shenanigans yesterday made me curious and I tested out how else to connect cities and I came up with aboves example. With Sailing all of these cities are connected. The trade route goes from Hadrumentum in the south

- via the coast jumping over the land bridge into the lake near Carthage
- from Carthage via the road to the fort at the lake
- the fort apparently serves as a point of entry to the lake 1NW of it
- from there we jump land again to the next lake 1NW.
- there we just enter the river like a normal person only to
- continue jumping across the rivers to
- finally jump the river bend and land in Utica

I love it. Craziest thing is that the fort helps with accessing from land to water tiles and vice versa.

EDIT: And yes that means you can have a completely landlocked empire without coastal cities and still have ocean or coast trade routes with other neighbors thanks to a fort.

Late to the party, but this was a pretty cool and useful illustration! Did you come to the conclusion that this chain works without Sailing inside your culture and with Sailing outside of it?

I wish there had been a detailed explanation of trade route mechanics available back in the days. Sailing typically solves all trade route issues, which is probably the reason people have not really studied the quirks (to my knowledge). But I'm sure that somewhere along the way a little bit of commerce has been lost due to lack of knowledge..  crazyeye

It should with either sailing or all relevant tiles in your culture. Will try to make an illustration with culture when I have the time

Some repetition shows in the map as Marble & Gems appear to our northeast.

I wouldn't be shocked if these were contention points - or perhaps they are there to lure us to different parts of the map than directly towards our neighbor. That would be a smarter map balance choice.

Warrior finished end of last turn, and while it's tempting to chase off Superdeath's scout, he's going to move it out anyway. Instead I am scouting southeast first. Scouting the southeast coast and then working our way west will mean the warrior is closer to the Corn/Deer location when the settler finishes end of t24. Right now it's looking more and more likely that we are going to be settling that western spot. I suppose our scout might find a similarly lush spot to the east, if the balance between stone & marble extends farther.

Somebody has connected a 5-food tile and taken the food lead. This would be the same timing if someone had our start and improved the grassland deer first. Meanwhile our worker has made it to the southern deer this turn and will start camping next turn.

Everybody is still size 1, so no fishy starts (pun intended).
