Turn 13

How am I doing reading your mind on the map, Kaiser?

Basically just looking at it and guessing, "If -I- were setting up a map like this, what would I do?"

anyway suspect there is a CS I missed somewhere to my southwest, to pair with the northwest and due east city-states we found. Possible that there are 4 per team, not 3, in which case Inc will have one off his southeast.

Chinguetti is good but Norway bait if left alive, so I must eat it.

Question for the lurkers -

I know I'm pressed for time, and the edited maps are a good way for me quickly give a report (I actually spend less time drawing and writing on the map than I did on my traditional screenshot heavy reports), but are they actually valuable for you guys? I thought they might help Civ IV lurkers follow the Civ VI action by pointing out what's important on the map, but I'm not sure. It's an experiment, so let me know how it's going.

Otherwise I can use weekends to give a big news dump, if possible, on the week's developments from my team's perspective.

I appreciate the format, as someone who otherwise wouldn't really know what to look at in a screenshot.

Turn 20

Weekly update:

* I killed a scout, Inc cleared his camp.
* Met Lahore, which kind of sucks. I think our third CS (meeting 3 city-states inspires Political Philosophy, the government civic) is to the southwest if they're spaced equidistantly around the starts.
* Will found my 2nd city on turn 23. Work 2/2 tile to start, want to open with HS to race for religion.
* More thoughts on religion later?
* Haven't been score tracking, have no time.

Questions about our game? I know we're updating the least of all teams, so if you want to know about anything based on the others' speculations about our actions and plans in their threads, lemme know.

Game is beginning to take hold of my brain a bit more now. City is founded in 2 turns (thick terrain between me and Malhari means settler walks one tile a turn even though I believe I finished him a turn before everyone else due to Urban Planning). Early dotmap of island is finished, should have a good economic base.

Not worried about domestic development, so concern turns to foreign policy: how do we
a)not get eaten by Norway
b)not let our local city states get eaten by Norway
c)not let our neighbor get eaten by Norway
d)balance all that (more or less a strong and united navy) with domestic development so we don't get left in the dust?

Norway's presence alone demands all three other teams carefully balance, because whoever gets it wrong, loses. Easiest just for all of us to band together and kill them.

Leaving aside the "don't let Norway win the game in the first 100 turns" plan, let's look at religion.

Should get religion second, after Japan (might or might not finish first HS, but Japan will certainly finish second HS before Malhari finishes). Each Holy Site is worth +2 housing/+2 amenities in addition to the faith (sadly a trickle compared to DOTA lavras, alas...), so every city will get one. What beliefs to shoot for? Second pick still has lots of great beliefs available:

Founders

  • Cross Cultural Dialogue - +1 Icon_Science per 4 followers
  • Lay Ministry +1 Icon_Faith or +1 Icon_Culture in each Holy Site/Culture Square
  • Papal Primacy Envoys spread religious pressure, type bonuses from CS 50% more powerful
  • Pilgrimage +2 Icon_Faith per city following this religion
  • Religious Unity +1 Envoy when a CS converts to this religion
  • Sacred Places +2 Icon_Science Icon_Culture Icon_Gold Icon_Faith in each city with a WW following this religion
  • Stewardship +1 Icon_Science or +1 Icon_Gold in each Campus/Commercial Hub
  • Tithe +3 Icon_Gold per city following this religion
  • World Church +1 Icon_Culture per 4 followers
Could make a strong case for either Tithe or Pilgrimage, but I expect Tithe to be gone. I shall probably claim Pilgrimage as a result. Every city converted is effectively +1 Icon_Production per turn empire wide, converting faith to production at a 2:1 ratio. That's a minimum of +12 production in the midgame, and probably closer to +20 in the late game. Assuming we get that far. Honestly, that might outweigh tithe, which becomes +36 Icon_Gold in the mid game (GPT) and maybe +60 Icon_Gold per turn late, which will be dwarfed by trade routes and other sources of gold.

Will choose pilgrimage, faith is harder to come by.

Out of time to write but Feed the World or Choral Music both look good since Work Ethic is banned.

Buildings
Enhancers

Will look later. Not taking a building.

Back at work, resuming looking at religion:

Followers:

Choral Music: Shrines and temples provide Icon_Culture as well as Icon_Faith
Divine Inspiration: Wonders provide +4 Icon_Faith
Feed the World: Shrines and temples provide +3 Icon_Food and +2 housing
Jesuit Education: Can purchase Campus and Theater Square buildings with Icon_Faith
Religious Communities: International trade routes provide +2 Icon_Gold per HS & HS building in city
Reliquaries: Relics provide triple Icon_Faith and tourism
Warrior Monks: Gain access to warrior monks, land combat unit purchasable with faith. HS culture bombs adjacent tiles.
Work Ethic: banned
Zen Meditation: +1 amenity per 2 specialty districts

Pretty much just two beliefs worth taking - Choral Music and Feed the World. FtW lets you grow larger cities, but I think CM is a stronger choice. It'll solve the culture game for the duration, giving us access to better governments and better policy cards than rival teams throughout (except maybe Gaul). Feed the World's two housing is covered by my River Goddess, so housing shouldn't be a concern, and 3 food is nice-to-have but not essential. In general, especially as the game gets later, culture is harder to come by than food.

Everything else except Work Ethic is weak. Jesuit Education used to be strong, but Monumentality, the Grandmaster's Chapel, and Indonesia's ability give plenty of other faith sinks so it's no longer needed.

Realistically my second belief will come from this category and not the enhancers since the dropoff in quality is so rapid. Will take whichever belief ljubljana leaves me.

Enhancers:

Pretty much just Crusade or DotF (or Holy Order, bwahaha). There's enough here though that it will indeed be an enhancer for me.

I know most of y'all lurkers don't care about this and really want to know how I'm going to stop the unstoppable longship deathball, and I still have no idea.

I'll figure it out later.

In the meantime, I continue to plot a religious victory.
