Great, thanks for all your feedback. I can imagine your suggestion for the ocean 1-tiles very well, it shoild be quick to implement.
Please feel free to edit the map and get it going, our son is there but I won't be back at a notebook until tomorrow evening.
I had no time yet to add a tile to red east CS to make it one tile sea access only.
The team islands need to be randomized, I suggest rolling a random ordered list of black, red, purple, gold to then asdign this order to the already decided playing order.
Also the player starts within their team need to be randomized, I suggest flipping a coin to decide western position. Heads could be alphabetical first team member.
It would be great if somebody can take care of the randomization.

I entered the colors into Random.org in alphabetical order and it came back Red, Gold, Purple, Black. I then entered all eight player names (alphabetically), generated a random list and assigned the first player listed from each team to the West start and the second to the East start. Results are as follows:
1) Red - West: Banzailizard, East: Woden
2) Gold - West: Thrawn, East: Krill
3) Purple - West: CMF, East: Incurian
4) Black - West: TAD, East: Ljubljana

I'm not going to commit but if I have time tonight I'll see what I can do about getting the 1-tile ocean areas revised per RefSteel's suggestions and get the start locations placed. I'll also advise the players that random starts have been generated.

Also note that shallow waters are very good for Japan (and bad for Norway ).
If not too much work we should limit shallow water to mainly coastal tiles and a few interconnections between islands ?

There's no way that the 'pink 1-tile costal CSs' are fair because there only 2 of them! The teams next to them would get shafted because they are harder to capture. I would fix this by adding a costal hex.

There are actually three (SE Black city-state has one tile of coastal exposure) and the SE city-state at the red start is getting edited to have only one tile of coastal exposure.
I couldn't get to the save file last night (RL issues got in the way). If I don't see anyone else grabbing it I'll try to give it a stab tonight.
Has the method of city-state assignment been determined or are we going completely random?

Thanks, we are back home but I barely get the time to get in front of the PC, so I am currently mostly following from my phone and have only limited response options.
Son and wife are healthy and we are just starting to get to know each other and the sleep rythm of our newborn :D
I saw that there are screenshots of the starts needed, I can provide these, but do not know if Suboptimal did anything on the map yet, so I will just provide the screenshots to the teams.
I had no issues loading the mod with the start positions enabled. I just made sure to do everything in advanced mode, save at the end and to set CS to 16. For some reason the game asks me to have the "better balanced starts" mod enabled, I probably forgot to disable it when working on the map? It does not change anything outside of offering a reroll when because players start to nearby each other.

First of all, congrats on the baby!
I haven't done any map editing other than to place start positions and attempt screenshots. I set the city-states to zero and the game has loaded as I type this, so those will get done shortly. The map still needs some editing, namely the removal of goody huts, the removal and placement of wonders (Galapagos Islands is "in" the island south of black start, for example) and perhaps some of the 1-tile ocean editing mentioned previously.
