Note: I claim to be neither a Diablo or Hellfire elitist. I also do not own Hellfire.
But, I do feel rather strongly about the issues brought up, hence why I am replying.
The core issue seems to be legitimacy vs making the variant suitable for play in a Hellfire Ironman game, SP. Since you are using Hellfire, any discussion of core Diablo is irrelevant. As such, I would imagine that it would be acceptable to transfer any unique items that any of your other SP characters have found via the CoW. Of course, that means it is in your best interests to get the Cow as early as possible.
Assume all earlier "birthday presents" to be null and void. Of course, your present will be wrapped, and you will more than likely have to start a new game to recieve it. (Unless I misunderstand tha application of the CoW.) To those of us who enjoy reading the exploits of Ironmen and women, this will be a fresh twist on this variant.
As for D1, there is already a mod available that allows one to legitamately (within the game universe) transfer items and spells from single player to multiplayer, etc. It's made by EA, for the PS1. Also, some variants are not, in their original context meant to be played in SP or MP. Naturally, that would mean finding said mod, but again, I don't think anybody would object to someone making a SP SNOB for that game.
As for D2 issues, I suggest birthday gifts be given once every 10 levels. D2 uniques may be "uberized", but you do have to FIND them first. Also, we need an idea on which skills are elite and which are not. For example, IMO, an elite skill for the Barbarian would be Iron Skin and Natural Resistance, but no weapon masteries. Of course, because there are no uniques useable by level 1 players, there would be no starting gifts. Besides, it's kind of fun to punch zombies.
