One more thing that I ought to mention: I think that future mods should prohibit opponents from building roads/railroads in your territory. As soon as you see this happening you should expect war and you have to immediately decided whether it's better to nuke trade routes if you're wrong about intentions or die to a swift, severe stab in the back if you are wrong about believing in that fish/fish deal.
Edit: I suppose closing borders is the obvious move and that this does not harm the peace bonus on trade routes, but it is still an abusable tactic if you are inside the 10t open borders deal. In that case, you have to choose between nuking routes or risking a backstab.

Or that the Commando promo itself should be nerfed. Not saying that because I suffered from it (I would have died anyway), but because it's the clearly obvious promotion of choice if a unit reaches that level.

Hey, it can be used for good purposes too. I railroaded your brother's last remaining BFC hill on his original continent shortly before he died, I'm sure it helped a lot.
I actually had the idea to start selling railroad services to my neighbors by offering 60gpt for iron+horse and then putting some knights on top of workers in their territory, but I couldn't think of a way to make it non-threatening. I also did railroad a few of Krill's hills for free with one of my wandering workers, in thanks for all the loans he gave me.
I dunno, I think its one of those things you just need to pay attention about and, if you see it happening, you should first cancel OB and reoffer, and then wardec if they try that shit again. At that point, routes should be a pretty minor concern because they're obviously hostile to you.
I'm still haven't discovered if TBS ever caught me pre-roading all over his territory just in case he turned hostile later...

I didn't realise you were doing this but I was extremely paranoid that you could use our OB agreement to lay down a bunch of roads and then attack with commandos on the same turn. I was really happy to see all those workers leave my land. IIRC that happened before railroads which is when things can really get nasty.
I'm not a fan of the commando promotion, I think late game civ has more than enough things to think about without throwing that in too.

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GODS
FFP: Last turn I put up nearly eight pages of blood in the event log, the previous turn a scant page and a half of kills (etc), and the turn before THAT another five pages of green, muderous events. My troops are drowning in blood and need a minute to let the crimson tide ebb. We equip our troops with guns, not snorkels.
Best post in pb18! Why wasn't this qotm?

And I'm done. Great thread boldly! I loved the national park stuff at the start and the way that, as you nuked your game you said something like "well this probably nuked my game."
I don't think I understood what happened with gj, but reading TBS and gj's threads in tandem is up next so maybe that will be enlightening.
Is there an argument for making domination easier to achieve? It seems like a victory condition that will never happen. Along with conquest... Also does map size need to have an effect on cv? I have a feeling that (with tech costs) in future huge maps will tend towards culture wins... (Not intended to take away from tbs' achievement - he played a great game too.)

That was something I wanted to ask you guys and BGN afterwards actually. Do you think you should have gone for a culture victory? Or maybe do you think you would have done so if you landed Sistine? Obviously a culture attempt would involve playing a lot of things differently, but I'd be interested in the answer.
I feel a lot of things went wrong yet the culture victory was still very competitive.
-I was already a bit behind OH/Fin ~T180, BGN had a larger demographic advantage.
-You then had an crazily efficient invasion of Pindicator
-Meanwhile my golden age into factories plan was shot by lack of coal
-I had one of my culture cities razed
-The massive empire sizes in this game makes culture less efficient. This point is countered somewhat by the travel distance.
So there's definitely a question IMO on whether culture is too good. IIRC the latest RBmod version decreases late game tech costs but buffs Free Speech.

Running culture slider means running slider in all of your cities, not just the ones you want to accumulate culture in. The more cities you have the more wasteful this becomes.
