Rusten and Hitru turn back the clock

Not going to update this thread until I start taking the game more seriously. Will put my effort into winning instead. I've been very relaxed towards this game because it was hard to stay engaged when we were unable to play 2 turns per day at any point in time during the early phase. I almost gave up on the game back then. Everything around the pandemic hasn't helped either, so I've not paid attention past turn 30 and now it's starting to show.

Some is due to frustration about the map. Being stuck in the center and most of our rivals having gimme +1 trade routes, but most of all I just get annoyed when I play poorly. We missed the Oracle by 1 turn and it was completely unnecessary. We could've just chopped a forest for it but I didn't have my head in the game. I then doubled down and decided not to whip it because NoGas had just completed GLH and the chance of anyone beating us to it was so low. But alas...

So to sum it up:
1 tile away from circumnavigation
1 turn away from Oracle
1st place in the end?

I'll do a mental reset and just try to play better from this point on.

I still considered us favourites and we would've been #1 in both crop and mfg this turn, but...

It seems Serdoa is an even greater psychopath than SD, electing to take a 69% shot at razing our size 1 (defended) city amphibiously and making a mortal enemy for the remainder of the game regardless of success/failure. Seems like a bad move to me, even more so as he has already pissed off SD. Good news for everyone except us and Serdoa.

Would you say then your micro hasn't been up to your normal standards?

Would've had another 12 food and 3 hammers if not for Serdoa (razed city + couldn't settle one this turn), which means we were doing just fine. But right now it's hard to be happy with so many things working against us. And guess what, we now have to switch to sending our WB through Bob instead, who might even end up killing it, who knows. Meaning there's a possibility of not getting circumnavigation bonus until optics and losing thousands of commerce -- great map/mod combination guys!!!!!! smile)))))))))))

See, this is why I said wouldn't post anymore. I hate whining and I hate whining threads, so I'm going to just leave it alone until I cool off. But I'm feeling completely fucked over and I'm a steaming ball of rage until posting otherwise. Serdoa's action might've been even more stupid than usual as it might actually get me back into this game through sheer anger. I guess I'm more of a Sith than a Jedi. My apathy did nothing to help me in this game, but my anger might.

I have been even busier than I thought during this time so can't really comment on micro as I have not been a part of it, but looking back I think we settled cities little bit too slowly and we definitely dropped the ball with oracle. We would have finished it 2 turns earlier with easy chop that was overlooked and 1 turn earlier with that same chop if we would have counted turns correctly. Then we doubled down on taking risk and not whipping it partly from frustration on our micro...

I will try to get back to my dedlurking standards before this game is over.

(Really the last post for a while)

I don't have many regrets in terms of early micro or settling tbh. Yes, I didn't sim or pay attention as much as I usually do, but there's only so much you can do when you have 4 neighbours and 2 of them are psychopaths. We've been dealt a really terrible hand and I really don't understand the map design. During the early turns when I met civs I expected a rectangle that stretched across the world, but for some reason there's this water part east/west which puts the ones starting there in a much more comfortable situation. Unlike the civs with huge safe backlines of water we've had to step into contested land at every direction and we've managed to both keep up in expansion, carve out a crop/mfg lead and protect our cities. You've just seen what immediately happens if a city is just slightly weakly defended. If we had settled cities faster they could've been razed too. The only real blunder is the Oracle, and that's from spacing out/drifting away from the game, but the turns up until then were pretty stellar honestly. I think SD's starting position is pretty problematic too, but I've yet to scout his land so I can't really comment yet (we just got OB).

In hindsight I wouldn't have even attempted to keep a peaceful border with Serdoa though, and thus settling the silver city more aggressively. But I've never played with him before so I didn't know he had such a duel/psychopathic civ nature. Just because you 'can' do something doesn't mean you should.

Go find yourself another horse mackoti. Serdoa has chosen combat until death. Good luck to the remaining 4 players in the game. Rusten signing out.
