Nexomon Extinction

Nexomon Extinction Plant Only Challenge Part 9

HAPPENING could resurrect the Tyrants in any order, and it seemed best to start with the hardest battles first before the level scaling would make them more difficult.  Since Mulcimer was both Fire type and the only one to actually fight Team Plant again, it was a high priority.  Raksuma led with Smoke Screen, and Mulcimer couldn't tag out to get its accuracy back.  Must have mispredicted with Absolute Barrier, and Double Slash Demotivated Raksuma.  Floreina was next, and it Screeched to cut Mulcimer's ATK and DEF.  Floreina's Green Sphere was no match for a Tyrant's 74 damage Double Slash.

Reeferus put up a better fight than expected with Double Slash, as it Demotivated Mulcimer for two turns in a row.  Couplet's Pummel helped, but its ATK was clearly falling behind the other Plants.  Peltry almost managed to conquer Mulcimer, but fell at the last moment to an 83 damage Blaze.  Shromboff was the sole survivor, and won with a finishing Tackle.  Shromboff turned down both Grasping Root and Bite.

HAPPENING warped to Drake Isles next.  Xanders tried to prevent him from reviving Eurus, starting with a Lv 50 Domigator that Raksuma killed with Leaf Dance.  Raksuma cast Smoke Screen on Boilgog and switched to Shromboff.  Green Sphere stalling made Xanders switch from Boilgog to Grath, and eventually switch back.  Sonic Scream put Boilgog to sleep, giving Shromboff enough turns to knock it out permanently.  Grath fell asleep too, and Xanders came prepared with his third Fire type Barboraco. . .who also fell asleep.  Xanders sacrificed Grath to Tackle when it had no chance of victory.  Shromboff knew it was time to rest on the bench when Barboraco gashed it with a 65 power Fire Claw with Burning status.  Floreina finished off Xanders's team, including the Immortis and Fortank.

Raksuma used Smoke Screen against the Lv 52 Acegon in Cadium, then switched to Shromboff.  Shromboff stalled Acegon out of Stamina and sang a Sonic Scream lullaby at the end.

Team Plant had a unique advantage against Ziegler's team of Darine and Titan, normally a tough boss in my challenges.  Their attacks were super effective against Darine, and they also resisted its Tsunami and Explosive Water.  Titan's Ghost type and Mineral attacks were a neutral matchup.  Raksuma used Smoke Screen when possible and knocked Darine's HP down to about half with Leaf Dances.  Reeferus dodged Rocknite on the switch and Leaf Danced Darine to death.  Darine managed to poison it with Toxic Splash before fainting.  Couplet and Peltry were only nuisances to Titan.  Floreina Screeched and held on for a while before tagging out to Shromboff.  Everyone survived the fight, and Shromboff finished off Titan with Green Flow.  Some Nexomon like Raksuma gained two levels.

The fight against the Laterian raider HAPPENING had to recruit was so tough that only Raksuma survived.  The team was Boilgog, the second Fire type Glontern, Tuskant, and Rustung.

Celine was the last fight in this session.  She didn't want Petram to be revived only to be killed by Vados again, and needed to make sure HAPPENING was strong enough to have a chance.  She led with Caninui the Psychic type, which Raksuma Leaf Danced to red HP.  It tagged out to the Fire monster Imburion, who destroyed Raksuma with a critical Burn.  Couplet Pummeled Imburion until it swapped to Goatlanche.  Couplet cast one final Fauna before Plasma united Couplet in death.  Peltry Vine Whipped Goatlanche until it was Bound and dead.  Peltry fought Imburion until being critically Burned.  Reeferus picked off both Caninui and Imburion, and sent Oregoon to red HP.  Tresaur's Sandstorm Confused Reeferus, and Mud Attack ooze defeated it.

Mineral types had an annoying tendency to confuse my monsters, including Shromboff and Floreina.   Lv 54 Quarmor was the last Mineral type, and my strongest Plant was at Lv 51.  Shromboff powered through the confusion to put Quarmor to sleep with Sonic Scream and won the battle.  The Plants are doing well considering the level disadvantage.  Can they beat the game below Lv 70?

Nexomon Extinction Plant Only Challenge Part 10

To revive Nivalis the iceberg Tyrant, HAPPENING had to fight both a cultist grunt and their leader Lobo.  Shromboff had learned Vine Whip in a Frozen Tundra leveling session, which was superior to Green Flow in every way except speed.  Peltry had gained Plasma Star, the best Normal attack a non-Normal Nexomon could have.

The grunt led with Stalagca.  Couplet attacked with Forest Energy until Stalagca was shattered, and had to retreat when Bisina Paralyzed it with Thunder Blast.  Reeferus Leaf Danced around Bisina and sent Zappnic to red HP.  However, Zappnic's Electric Storm put Reeferus in critical condition, so it swapped to Peltry.  Blitz Barrier Paralyzed Peltry after the fatal Vine Whip to Zappnic.  Peltry and Harectic exchanged blows, and the Water type was Bound by Vine Whip.  A critical Hydro Sphere put Peltry in the red, causing it to tag out to Raksuma.  All Raksuma had to do was enter the arena, since Bound status choked Harectic at the end of the turn.

HAPPENING had to fight Lobo immediately afterwards.  The paralyzed Couplet summoned enough Forest Energy to make Varawirl switch to Blazetilia.  Its 89 power Incinerate cremated Couplet.  Floreina was next, and Lobo switched to Rapnux the pseudo-Wind Normal.  After enduring with Green Sphere until Rapnux was at low HP, Floreina stared down Blazetilia again.  Blazetilia's Fire attacks overwhelmed Green Sphere, though the prospect of Screech stat reduction sent it running to Rapnux.  Floreina also Screeched at Rapnux, and sacrificed itself to Gust Wind.

Shromboff carried the team through the rest of the Lobo battle.  Sonic Scream had the odd effect of both healing Blazetilia and giving it a 5 turn Sleeping counter.  Why?  Blazetilia had used Siphon.  Shromboff's Vine Whip lashed Rapnux, and Vine Whip Bound Blazetilia when it returned.  Varawirl was third to perish, and Shromboff Bound Shardrillion.  Foreer and Lurkennie were reserved for the end.  The former snoozed after a Sonic Scream.

Before taking on the Grandmaster challenge (i.e. Elite 4), Team Plant trained for a while.  Raksuma learned the ultimate Plant attack Thorn Pit, and Peltry finally became the third Green Sphere user at Lv 60.

Previous monotypes needed to be at Lv 67-68 (Mineral), or could barely win at Lv 72 (Normal).  How did Team Plant do?

Nolan the Water tamer was first, with a team of Snaijet, Sirnymfa, Hainok, and Scailla.  Peltry soloed them all. Snaijet's Toxic Splash was poisonous, but Hainok's Ice Flakes temporarily cured Peltry by freezing the onion instead.  Hainok later re-poisoned Peltry with its own Toxic Splash.

Nolan the Fire tamer was the only weakness the Plants had in the Grandmaster challenge, with a team of Antlorm, Kerosion, Lamparos, and Felclaw.  All three Green Sphere users were required here since Kerosion the kerosene genie was so mighty with Fire Claw and Fire Stigma.  Lamparos fell victim to Sonic Scream's side effect, as did Felclaw for a turn.  Shromboff stayed in for the rest of the fight after switching in.

Riley the Electric tamer was third, with a team of Voltaic, Omecharge, Resonic, and Reptomotor.  Peltry was so weakened by previous fights that a resisted Electric Storm killed it.  Floreina methodically murdered Riley's monsters one by one, and learned Thorn Pit as a reward.

Admin the Tamer Guild administrator was the surprise "champion".  Her team was a mix of Normal and Psychic types:  Lioness, Rapnux, Orologikus, Tundrox, Horget, and Glunch.  Since Peltry was dead, Reeferus was the automatic lead.  Reeferus heavily damaged Lioness and cut Rapnux down to about half HP with Leaf Dance until it was low on HP.  Floreina handled the rest of the battle by alternating between Green Sphere and Thorn Pit.  Tundrox was probably the worthiest enemy since it knew Super Slam.

Team Plant is not only ahead of Team Mineral and Team Plant, but might as well have a whole lap on them.  All of them are Lv 61-62, and that's including any experience gained from Admin.  Couplet and Raksuma relaxed on the bench for the whole Grandmaster challenge, even.  They'll probably need another leveling session to ensure they can defeat Amelie and Vados back to back, but the outlook for a sub Lv 70 victory looks good.

Nexomon Extinction Plant Only Challenge FINALE

At Lv 64-65, HAPPENING fought Xanders for the last time.  Couplet Pummeled his Boilgog until it switched to Grath.  Once Couplet was feeling weak, it tagged out to Reeferus.  Grath imitated Shromboff by casting Sonic Scream repeatedly, but Reeferus's Double Slashes and Leaf Dance knocked out the Fire bear.  Peltry alternated between Green Sphere and Plasma Star against Boilgog, who swapped to Wargoyle.

Wargoyle's Drill was strong, but Peltry held on until being Confused by Resonating Rock.  Shromboff killed Boilgog with a Tackle, Vine Whipped Wargoyle to death, and also fought against Rustung until it received a taste of its own sleep-inducing Sonic Scream.  Peltry returned after its confusion turns ended and conquered Xanders by shooting Plasma Star at the final Blizzaur.

Edward led with a type disadvantage by sending out Domigator.  Couplet made leather out of its hide with Forest Energy.  Floreina came out against Lumerei, and also soloed the rest of Edward's team:  Foreer, Gradow, Goblat, and Shardberg.  Lumerei's moves were oddly weak for an endgame boss fight, like Scratch and Fire Bomb.

Protovados brought some shade with Eternal Darkness, which hit Couplet for 114 damage!  Couplet switched to Shromboff after an opening Forest Energy.  Protovados then changed to Fire type and sublimated Shromboff with Solar Flare.  Floreina Screeched at Protovados, who became a Water type for some reason.  Floreina welcomed the opportunity to endure a Tsunami and drop the boss into Thorn Pit.

Wind was the next phase of the fight, and Floreina Double Slashed Protovados in response.  Cyclone and Slashing Current uprooted Floreina, and Raksuma entered the arena.  Protovados switched to Electric type and cast EMP as Raksuma threw it into a Thorn Pit.  Plant Protovados killed Raksuma with Leaf Dance.  Reeferus finished off Protovados with Leaf Storm while it was in its Mineral form.

Amelie had a team of Noocidal, Dracon, Namansi, Hainok, Tresaur, and Feliblanqo.  All were dangerous.  Dracon was the sturdy Fire type, and the fully evolved starters had raw ATK power.  Hainok could freeze and Tresaur could cause confusion.  And anyone who died or was injured in this fight would have no chance against Vados.

Vados itself required a change of tactics.  Team Plant usually relied on Green Sphere healing to outlast any opponent.  Vados's Meteor Shower hurt more than healing every other turn could recover, and so the only option was pure offense.  Floreina was the sole survivor with 21/256 HP when the final Thorn Pit gave Team Plant the checkered flag at Lv 65-67!

Nexomon Extinction Plant Only Challenge Postscript

Raksuma Lv 66, Ultra Rare

HP:  223
ST:  163
ATK:  129
DEF:  95
SPD:  144

Leaf Dance
Thorn Pit
Smoke Screen
Absolute Barrier

-Despite its Ultra Rare status, Raksuma is one of the lesser Plants on the team.  Sure, it has good stats and the strongest Plant move in the game, but it has its drawbacks.  Raksuma has subpar Normal coverage, and those moves come late the story.  It would gladly trade the "survive at 1 HP" Absolute Barrier for Green Sphere, the healing move that distinguishes the top-tier Plants.  Absolute Barrier doesn't protect against damage over time ailments, and also makes you run out of Stamina quickly.  Smoke Screen's accuracy reduction helps in close battles, especially against those Tyrants that don't switch.  Raksuma is weak in its first form relative to other Nexomon, so it has a hard time in the early game.

Reeferus, Lv 65, Uncommon

HP:  214
ST:  164
ATK:  132
DEF:  84
SPD:  140

Leaf Dance
Double Slash
Tackle
Stamina Surge

-Reeferus functions as a pure attacker, and is decent at that job.  Is it worth the late evolution at Lv 40 over other Plants?  Probably not.  Algon is good in the early game, then noticeably falls behind until Tomb of Omnicron.  The transformation isn't as dramatic as that from Magikarp to Gyarados, or Dragonair to Dragonite.

Couplet, Lv 66, Uncommon

HP:  212
ST:  143
ATK:  119
DEF:  87
SPD:  136

Quick Feet
Fauna
Pummel
Forest Energy

-Out of all the members of Team Plant, Couplet's performance declines the most from early to late game.  It's great in the Singletti stage with Leaf Dance, and gets practically nothing by the end.  Still, it helps with tough early bosses like Fona.

Peltry, Lv 67, Rare

HP:  223
ST:  143
ATK:  100
DEF:  90
SPD:  150

Green Sphere
Focus Seed
Vine Whip
Plasma Star

-Peltry's performance fluctuates more than other Plants.  As an Onin, it's weak, but it evolves around Immortal Citadel and Super Slams bosses.  There were several occasions in my playthrough when only Peltry saved HAPPENING from defeat, such as the Drake Isles bosses Dracon and Ventra.  But early evolution comes with the price of having lower stats than other Plants.  Peltry catches up around the time of the Grandmaster challenge by learning Vine Whip and Plasma Star for attacks.  As for Green Sphere, Peltry doesn't get it until Lv 60!

Shromboff, Lv 66, Common

HP:  225
ST:  161
ATK:  131
DEF:  87
SPD:  133

Vine Whip
Tackle
Sonic Scream
Green Sphere

-Don't be fooled by its Common status.  Shromboff can solo entire teams with Green Sphere healing, especially if you can roll for the sleep side effect of Sonic Scream.  Tackle is useful for picking off red HP enemies that resist Plant, and Shromboff learns it sooner than Reeferus.

Floreina Lv 67, Mega Rare

HP:  220
ST:  168
ATK:  107
DEF:  92
SPD:  150

Green Sphere
Double Slash
Screech
Thorn Pit

-As much as I like Shromboff, I'll have to rank Floreina as the best Plant out of those that participated in a monotype challenge.  Green Sphere's utility was explained earlier, though Floreina has a different move to support it.  Screech cuts bosses' ATK and DEF, and may give you the edge needed to survive super effective attacks.  Double Slash is a reliable if slow Normal attack.  Floreina kills enemies faster than Shromboff, especially with the endgame move Thorn Pit.  The only drawback to Floreina is that it evolves later than I'd like, though the wait isn't nearly as bad Reeferus's.

Plant so far is the best monotype, and that's due to Green Sphere.  Most other Plant moves that aren't direct damage are disappointing compared to other types, especially when it comes to poison side effects.  Plant's weakness to Fire hurts it a lot as there are many Fire bosses like Mulcimer, Xanders, Dracon, and Finn.  Wind is a bad weakness to have as well due to Drake Isles bosses like Eurus and Ventra.  However, Plant makes up for it with strengths against common types such as Water (e.g. Atlanta + Nivalis, Nolan), Electric (Bolzen + Riley), and even Psychic (Darine, Admin).  Ironically, Plant itself is the least relevant enemy type in Nexomon Extinction since the closest thing it has to a "boss" is the Raksuma near Hidden Village.  Plant Tyrants such as Tikala and Nara actually help the protagonist, and no Renegade or "Elite 4" member uses Plants.
