Not sure I understand this, KoP. It appears that D2 and then Lord of Destruction are available separately. Is it recommended to try the classic D2 first, or go ahead and get the expansion and play that way from the start?
Also, do I need to beware single player vs multiplayer character issues, like with D1? Any other limitations that I should be aware of before I start and invest a bunch of time in a character?
Thanks to everyone for the information and opinions. They have been very helpful.
You play it with LoD from the very start. So many QoL things from that expansion that make the base game look like a hot mess.

What superdeath said. I would assume most anyone with D2 has also bought LoD, it's like a must have upgrade. And why not, if only for the 2 additional classes, Druid and Assassin. You will love it. Diablo 2 is when many of us embraced the excuse to get new computers to run the game smoothly.
At least we'll be at the same page when we talk about the game.

Thanks, superdeath and KoP. I was not entirely clear on just what was in the LoD expansion. Diablo 2 is so old it is from before the 'Game of the Year edition' concept.
Hmmmm, now to decide on which class to play first. Lots of options....

For diablo 2? I recommend most first time players play a sorc. OR a druid. Although if you are looking for a challenge, barbarian.

There is also the necromancer, magic damage, bone prisons, corpse explosion, or skeletons / revives, and more crowd control than you can shake a flayer shaman at.

Thanks, superdeath and Boro!
How fragile is a sorceress? As I think I mentioned early in the thread when choosing my D1 character, I usually try to pick someone fairly sturdy for the early learning stage of playing a game, just to be a little more forgiving of my inevitable blunders.
The variety of options for doing damage and ranged capability are certainly appealing for the sorcerer. Although I am guessing that some specialization would be needed to develop sufficient power in any one area, with some diversification for dealing with enemies immune to the primary specialty. What is a typical level for a character to complete normal? I have no idea how much everything will scale in D2.
Edit: Also, should I start a new thread since this will no longer be about D1? Or continue in this thread?

I can't tell if you're asking those questions about the D1 sorceror or D2 sorceress. D2 in a new thread would make sense. It's not like you have a lot of competition in this forum.

I was asking about D2. Another reason for a new thread -- avoid potential confusion.
Thanks again to everyone for all the helpful info and encouragement! I have had a lot of fun with D1, and will likely return at some point (especially if Blizzard gets around to getting the Hellfire expansion available through GOG).

If you are looking for someone sturdy, go with Necromancer.
Typical normal difficulty (diablo) is level 24ish. (Baal) is 30. The scaling in D2 is basically, diversify. If you spec say, Cold and dont have anyway to do other types of damage.. you will suffer. Normal difficulty is mostly a breeze, except 4 areas imo.
