[Spoilers] Woden takes on the World (PBEM18)

Turn 37
Open the save to State Workforce completing. I swap out Ilkum for Urban Planning since I am switching to production at Gondor to the Government Plaza and won't be building builders while I research Early Empire. For the Governor's Title, I put Pingala in Osgiliath. Warrior completes in Osgiliath and the city starts another. Both the new warrior and slinger head towards the barb camp. My northern warrior moves across the river next to the camp and my southern warrior heads north along the river by Fez. Here is what it looks like at end of turn...

Internationally, CMF finished a civic. Kaiser is still the only one with a district and I have not seen any population drops to indicate a new settler is out. Might be that everyone is beefing up their defenses right now or recently started settlers, since some have completed Early Empire.

Next big turn will be Turn 41, when Early Empire and the Government Plaza finishes. I will put Magnus into Gondor and promote Pingala with Researcher. Then he will establish on T42 and I should have some decent science. Around turn 55, I should have enough to attach La Venta, if they have built their Holy Site. I should have also finished PP and in Oligarchy while I work on the Ancestral Hall, to get the Legacy card. Then I will switch to Autocracy for the bonus yields and military card slots. Should be able to time it so I am in Oligarchy for 3 turns if I double chop the hall. No need to put my neighbors on alert.

Once the hall is complete, plan is to push out 4 settlers and then build an army. No plan to finish any techs after Celestial Navigation, I will bring everything I can down to 1 turn and complete them once the era changes. Should save me 83Icon_Science with the 20% discount and have enough overflow to 1-turn all the ancient stuff and a bunch of the classical techs, and then 2-turn Apprenticeship (if my calcs are correct).

I know Celestial Navigation is costing 24Icon_Science more right now to get Cothons on-line but +50% settler production and a guaranteed classical Golden Age is worth it. Overall, it will be a net gain of 59Icon_Science and at my current rate of 6.8 spt, that's over 8 turns of research. When it happens, it will only be like 3-4 turns of research but ignore that, 8+ sounds better.

This is the kind of high level stuff I love to see you guys work out, amazing.

Good luck, sounds like a plan  hammer

Turn 38
Open the save to find the barb spearman has attacked my warrior, redlining him. I move up my slinger and other warrior to find a La Venta warrior next to the camp. Good, I fortify my red-lined warrior with the hope that the La Venta warrior will red-line the barb and I can steal the camp gold from him.

Now, you may ask yourself why won't I retreat my injured warrior because the barb spearman will for sure attack and kill him. Nope, I am 95% sure he is safe. Barbs are the last to move, so the La Venta warrior will attack before the spear, red-lining him, and then he won't attack. Hopefully, the warrior will do enough damage that my warrior can kill the spear and steal the gold.

Here is how it looks at the end of my movements...

Internationally, Ichabod finished a tech and CMF finished another civic and now is in 4th place with suboptimal in last place.

Brazil comes with an offer...

That is tempting but do I really want to give up 40% of my income? No, I decline. I will send a whales for spice offer next turn when I hook up my whales. With the 2nd whales and spice, I can get the 10% happiness bonus in both cities until Gondor grows to size 5.

Turn 39
I started to get a little worried as the save loaded. I wasn't sure my warrior would still be around. They did change who the AI targets in one of the last patches, that is why I gave a 95% probability that he would still be around. Wasn't 100% if they changed how the barbs function.  I open the save and...

My warrior was still around and the La Venta warrior did red-line the spear enough for me to steal the gold dancing

Slinger took a shot at the barb scout, red-lining him. Pretty sure the La Venta warrior will kill him. Slinger will move north to look for a camp northwest of La Venta. Pretty sure that 3rd scout from a few turns ago is from a camp up there. I need to still get the boost to Archery. If the scout is able to move south, slinger will chase him and hopefully I can trap him with my southern warrior.

I got the boost to Early Empire when I opened the save and it looks like it will finish the turn after the Government Plaza. My calculations might be off a little or there is a rounding error somewhere because I should have been able to squeeze it out on the same turn as the GP, oh well. Osgiliath grew a population and starts working the whales for a little more gold. Gondor will grow next turn, which might be why I have EE finishing on T41. I know it is close, I will have to dig into it or double check next turn.

Builder hooks up the whales and I send this to Ichabod...

Not sure if he wants such a deal, he may have been looking to limit my gold production with his last deal. If he refuses the deal, there is a higher likelihood he is gunning for a horsemen or swordsmen push on me.

Internationally, suboptimal jumps for last place to 3rd, gaining 7 points by finishing a civic, gaining 2 empire points (possible district), and 2 era points (distant barb camp?). Kaiser also grew a population and finished a tech. CMF grew a population.

Picture didn't come through but glad the warrior survived!

Interested to see the reaction to the trade offer.

Turn 40
Open the save to see that Ichabod has rejected my offer. I see 1 of 3 possibilities: (1) He has whales that he will hook up soon, (2) he doesn't have any cities at +2 happiness that would need a boost to get the 10% bonus, or (3) he is planning early aggression. I don't think any of the option stands above the rest and it can be any of them. I will say, thinking it over while doing my turn, I realized that Brazil might not have easy access to another neighbor. The continental divide is just east on my capital and from what I can see, it goes north to south with mountain ranges along all what I can see. If it continues, like most pangaea maps typically do, there may be a natural buffer all the way to the southern ocean. Also, he looks to start closer to the western edge of the continent, unlike me whose civilization will straddle the divide. Meaning, I might be his only option for early aggression. No matter what I plan to do in the future, I will need to make sure I have a defensive line between us, which also means I need to defog the space between us.

As for the turn, a new barb camp shows up southeast of the capital, a little closer to Bologna than me...

La Venta's warrior did kill the scout, so I send my new warrior and slinger northwest to look for a target up in the fog and get into position to capture La Venta. The near death warrior moves towards Osgiliath to heal and my southern warrior slowly moves east long the southern shore of the small lake by Fez.

Barb scout from the new camp is already at my borders but has not activated yet. I will have the new warrior next turn head towards the camp. Hopefully, Bologna won't kill it before I can get over there.

Next turn will be a fairly big turn. Government Plaza will finish and I will get an envoy into Bologna. Early Empire will finish (display says 2 turns but when I go into the civic tree, it does say 1 turn). I will get 2 governor titles, one will promote Pingala to researcher for the +1Icon_Science per pop and the other will assign Magnus to the capital. I will also boost Celestial Navigation. It has about 6-7 turns of research left with the boost, the envoy, and Pingala is established on T42. The plan will be to continue with warriors at Osgiliath and a couple of builders at Gondor while I research Political Philosophy. Then get a few Cothons built and chop out the Ancestral Hall once I have PP done. I should have enough warriors to declare a few turns after PP finishes. Oligarchy will help take La Venta and once the AH is complete, I will switch to Autocracy for the extra yields and more military cards.

Internationally, no changes in score. Another player has started generating Great Scientist points and I assume it is suboptimal. His empire score rose by 2 last turn. Ichabod has about twice my military power. No worries though, a few of my warriors are hurt and should have a stead stream of new warriors for the next 10 or so turns.

Getting very interesting!

I agree scouting is critical at this juncture.

Have La Venta built their Holy Site yet?

No Holy Site yet but I expect now that I will have a district complete next turn (meaning 3/5 civs have a district), they will probably build it. We will definitely wait until it is built before we attack.
