Did Sareln just build the Hanging Gardens? That probably wasn't a good idea, he has 6 cities, he could have built the mids with PHI. I'm not on track for it, though it's a possibility, let's see how long it takes to snatch that stone tile, or if I can settle that stone city soon.

Neato, I DoWed Ioan to snatch a worker, push him back a little territory. For some bizarro reason, Ioan then DoWed GE. There's an opportunity here...

Oh hey Ioan sent an email. Don't know how kosher it is, but I don't think it breaks the spirit of CTON, only thing it tells me is to be less paranoid and more confident about my play:
Quote:Congratulations ...
... you managed to outmanouver me in the north.
Best regards,
Ioan
Ioan made a big mistake, he left a WI jag exposed in a forest, and had an axe/spear pair out of position on the gold tile. I blocked the road from the gold to the city with my own stack. The plan was to use shock axes to knock down the HP of his archers, and then hit his axes with my chariots, and raze his Jewish holy city.
Another thing, I lost another axe attacking his C2 chariot. Goddamnit, that hero chariot has 3 kills to it, two axes lost attacking at 70+% odds, and a sacrificial chariot I left exposed. At least he's on track for building the heroic epic.

Also of interest, Sareln built the mids. There goes that plan. I really have to ignore him for now, my terrain is defensible against Sareln, less against Ioan. I smell weakness, Ioan's crashed his economy pretty badly, and losing his gold city would be a massive setback. I'm saving gold right now in anticipation of my academy (GS was just born!), I think I'm going to have to commit to this war, deal some real damage and take some exposed and developed cities. I'm on track for researching masonry, I'll need to check when construction comes in.

Huh, Ioan isn't as screwed as he thought he would be, 2 axes, 2 archers, and a spear behind 40% cultural defenses. Up against 3 axes (2 of my axes are red-lined), 2 spears, and 2 chariots. Let's see what the sims say...
Nope. Unlikely to work. I'm going to need cats. Oh well, the next best thing is to do a pillage party, I want to get rid of that gold tile, as it probably makes up an uncomfortable amount of Ioan's research, his economy is crashed hard and he really wants it for the vertical growth.
I'm going to put 100% research into masonry. Good god, my GNP spiked to 219, unfortunately it's completely unsustainable and it will drop down to a more reasonable rate later. Luckily, reasonable rate is competitive with Sareln's 6 cities, so I'm in damn good shape.

I think you are in the wrong game Nicolae, should have been in the pros . Very good job until now.
Plus, your city naming scheme rocks!

I actually feel like a horrible meanie because I've been hyperaggressive without diplomacy holding me back and I and keep declaring war to force pressure. Then again, I only did that because I have been utterly terrified of Ioan, I'd much rather have dudes on their territory than on mine. Yeah. It's because he started it
Also, Ioan has nearly as many cities as I have, I think he may have been compensating for his lack of expansion earlier, but I have ~60% more crop yield and hence a better commerce:maintenance ratio.
And this game is not lost! Sareln has 6 cities and the mids, GE has 6 cities and the colossus, their economies are quite healthy and I can see them winning the lib race and killing my ancient/classical era chaff with knights. My economy on the other hand is incredibly fragile.

Ioan spent an axe on 35% odds to kill my shock axe on a hill (it was on ~4.5 strength, but still). That's annoying, he didn't make any more attacks on my shock spear and chariot, I guess he valued his city more than clearing out his gold tile. Construction came in at end of turn via some tile micro.
You know, I was never intending to really move in, and I doubt Ioan was expecting me to move in (he DoWed GE, remember), but I have a revised plan to cut off that Jewish/Gold city with a stack of my own, hammer down defenses with cats, and raze it to protect my north. I may never take peace now, I want to choke down his economy, he has the greatest long-term prospects thanks to his rapid expansion. Sareln is *still* sitting on 6 cities, though he's spammed out almost every stone wonder (GW, HG, mids). The backup plan (which was the original) was to simply pillage all his commerce tiles, if I'm lucky, it will completely paralyse his teching and cripple him.

Well that's kinda fucked. Ioan lost 1 battle at 25.9% odds, then won a bunch at 21.3%, 50%, 50%, and 100%. It was a pillage party on flat ground, I guess he was going to take those odds at some point anyway. I'm going to have to put the pillage party to the north on halt, else I'll lose the pillaging stack.
Edit: Oh bloody hell Sareln just built an academy in the border city for the culture. That's going to be a pain, never thought of that.
