Whether it would work? Or help your position? Not for a general lurker to comment smile

Quote:My sims showed no problem with Hyb spawning, he had the needed units, as far as I could tell.

Yeah, he's definitely fine in SP, so it's some sort of weird MP interaction that was bringing him down.

And what Mardoc said.

Thanks, guys! And that means I'll have to do some Hyborem/Infernals explanation posts. I mean, really, because I don't know much about them and I won't have much to talk about in the next 80 turns of 1 city challenge!

A nice thing in this run for the already initiated (the ones who know what I'm talking about) is that we get to build the Prophecy of Ragnarok and spam some marked units after it's built. So we get a decently raised Armaggedon Counter when Hyb comes to play! Not by that much, but at least is something. And hopefully the Sidar AI keeps helping us with it (or better still, we capture Celo after spawning the Infernals and we keep spamming those units ourselves).

By the way, Hyborem is now Aggressive, Summoner and Barbarian, right? He lost SPI, right?

Holy legion of fire and doom, Infernal cities now start at size 6?!? That's awesome! Please, oh, please, let me be the only one rushing for Hyb in this game. I really want to play them after seeing this.

Yup and yup.

Btw, when you switch to Hyborem you can queue a ton of units and the AI will finish them all.

When my best interest is rushing to demons and filling the world with flames and the horsemen of apocalypse, I'd say it converges pretty nicely with the lurker's best interest. lol

Turn 8 report will be up tomorrow. I couldn't finish it yet and I need to go to bed.

Turn 8

Upon finding out I’m not a bad person, the game decided to reward me for being a good person. BUT IT SEEMS I’M JUST A NEUTRAL PERSON! rant

Funny thing is, a free GPro would probably give me a better Hyborem date by +10 turns. The trained eye would probably realize I didn’t have the needed 50g in both occasions, but I guess a man can dream of the perfect scenario: with 2 Free GProphets and Mysticism popped from that hut a few turns ago, I could get a turn 50 Hyborem or something! dancing

But since we are neutral, we have to rely on micro to get a faster Hyborem, not on dumb-and-undeserved-because-I’m-not-the-one-getting-lucky luck (like the opponents who could settle near Yggdrasil -> I’m looking at you, Bob, my more-times-wrong-than-right C&D abilities tell me you are the proud owner of it. You just wait until I burn your cities with demonfire!! devil ). Speaking of micro, here’s some cheap micro trick that I can teach. Not much and probably a lot of people know it already, but it’s worth mentioning:

The worker is currently at 45/50 hammers. I’m generating 6 food + hammers this turn, so you’d expect I’d get 1 hammer overflow into my next build. But, since overflow is divided by the production bonuses (and maluses, more on that later) you had on the build being finished (in this case 25% on workers from IND), and since Civ 4 always rounds down hammers, that 1 hammer overflow would be divided by 1.25 (25% bonus), which gives 0.8 hammers, that are rounded down to 0. Therefore, we get no overflow. In this case, it’s better to do this:

This time, we finish the worker at 50/50 production. That also results in no overflow, but at least we get a from the floodplain tile commerce out of the deal. This is the easy type of micro decision for me, because it’s just an obvious gain. I’m way worse in comparing results of different attempts (especially when the strategies involved are very different) or trying to quantify the benefits of different “currencies” (like, what is best: 3 commerce or a hammer, 5 more worker turns or a new city settled 1 turn faster). Anyway, those are some challenges I want to try and overcome in my sims of the Hyborem attempt.

Spoilers for those interested in micro:

Interestingly enough, if you have a production malus, the overflow you get from the build just finished also gets divided, sometimes resulting in a “bonus” hammer. Here’s an example:

The warrior is at 15/16 and we are adding 5 hammers in this last turn. So, you’d expect an overflow of 4 hammers. But, since the Sidar get a -20% unit production while under Pacifism, this overflow will be divided by 0.8 and 4/0.8 = 5.

I didn’t know it worked this way. BTS doesn’t have any sort of production maluses that I can remember (and for a good reason, I think FFH does a pretty big mistake in adding them, considering the rounding down of hammers), so it’s probably not a very well-known mechanic. In any case, it works as you’d expect, I guess, following the same rule as the overflow with bonuses.
Anyway, back to the game. Empowered by my recently adopted brave persona, I ordered The Wanderer to explore the, luckily still unguarded, Lizardmen Lair.

I did it in oh-so-boldly fashion because I was under the impression that lairs took 3 turns to explore in EitB. But, that seems to be the case (I realized after pressing the button) for dungeons only, and lairs are still explored instantly. I was preparing myself to be afraid of the likely dooming results three turn for now, so I didn’t even have time to get scared before I saw the result popping in the screen. Ah, the joy of obliviousness, always making our lives easier to live!

And we got a good result on top of that! No more lizards from this lair and a healing salve to save our scout of any harm (of the non-lethal type; the healing salve is a one time consumable item that heals back the unit holding it to full health, if I'm not mistaken). Of course, any eagle-eyed lurker around will notice that we have yet another cool Lizard Ruins nearby! How nice! I wouldn’t mind a barrow and skeletons, but why does it have to be lizardmen? Blargh! I hope that I can also reach the second lair before it spawns a defender.

It seems I’m in some sort of peninsula, probably pretty far from other players. That means I’ll have a lot of pesky barbs running around, even with no lairs. Well, this means I need to focus more on military in my sims and it makes me less concerned about going straight for a warrior after the worker. I have a basic overflow from warrior into Pagan Temple or EC plan already devised, so I guess I’ll follow that for now – this way I’ll have quite a lot of turns to sim the next steps and I’ll also not be running with a single warrior defender for too long. Because two warriors are an impenetrable defense, right? smug

I said two warriors? I guess I’m getting a bit ahead of myself, since I’m not entirely sure The Yearner will return to his promised keep. C’mon, man, you can do it! I really need you back! Man, two tiles are a world of a distance in FFH…

EoT we have our worker and we finished our tech. Beautiful! Next order of business is starting a warrior (at 1 hammer per turn because pacifism) and starting on Mysticism. I need to do a general post about how I’m planning to reach Infernal Pact as quick as possible (by my Civ skill standard), showing what I need to research, what I need to build an so on, so lurkers have a general understanding when I mention my sims.

The next turn already reached my inbox, but I can’t play it until later. Damn, I’m really curious to see if a lizardman spawned and the next scout move… Boy, oh, boy, I’m pretty excited by this game.
