Agreed. Stay out of the war.
The French are technically Germanic. Fun Factoid.

eh, that's not completely correct. the Franks were Germanic, but the Celts are not at all Germanic. Like every country in Europe, the French are a mix of many different peoples. The French are mostly an equal mix of Franks, Celts, and Italian peoples. So I guess you could call them 1/3 Germanic? :P. The English and Scandinavians are more closely related to Germanic peoples than the French are.
Historically, the French have had a deep fear of German tribes, even long before Germany was formed as a country.

Yup, the French state itself descends from the Germanic states that rose after the fall of the Western Empire which absorbed what was left of the Roman bureaucracy. You can trace a centralized 'French' state all the way back to the Gallic Empire in the Crisis of the Third Century if you really wanted to.

In conjunction with the chat I just posted in the tracking thread, here's a couple comments in terms of diplo strategy with CFC going forward:
1) I'm hoping I can prevent a scenario where Caledorn steps down from doing diplo for CFC. I say that because he's made a couple comments implying he isn't sure he's doing such a great job, and I'm hoping he doesn't talk himself out of the role. He seems to be the type of guy who wouldn't be able to straight-up lie to me, and that's valuable to us. I don't think he necessarily holds huge amounts of sway on his team - so that doesn't mean CFC wouldn't ever be enemies with us... But I think he's fairly transparent, which makes it easier to sniff out theoretical treachery.
2) I disagree with the prevailing notion that CFC is inherently hostile to us. As I mentioned in the "Rant Thread" - Sommerswerd has not logged into his CFC account in over 2 weeks, implying he's not very checked into the game right now. At one point Caledorn was away for a day or two, and CFC wanted to notify me that they received the message. The person that notified me was actually YossarianLives. If he's their second-in-command for diplo, I'm happy about that. He likes people at RB, got along well with us all on the Gillette team for the RB Demogame, etc. Point is - he likes us. If their two-headed diplo team is Caledorn + Yossarian, that's great news for us. If Sommerswerd becomes more active, maybe not so much.

I agree with this. I don't think CFC will be our biggest threat in this game. They may have been dicks in the setup thread, but that doesn't mean they are necessarily focused on only beating us. I suspect they could be dangerous if we ever get to true runaway status, but my gut says they aren't necessarily skilled enough at Civ (based on their current status) not necessarily recognize that early enough to do something effective about it. Also, that they could be dangerous if we become a runaway is the exact same as every other team with a chance of winning this game, so I see no reason to treat them differently than the other contenders. If anything, the terrible-at-civ teams are probably more dangerous to us than the teams that have a chance at winning.

I think the hostility to CFC is just abit of pre-game bias from annoying stupidness of Sommer, I think we have the best relations with them (and I best, best lines of communication) out of our current menagerie of neighbors.

Two comments on the chat with CFC:
1.) If UCiv is NE of WPC, we are probably looking at three rows of civs. Curious how plako placed them in relation to the jungle and tundra.
2.) If SpApo is to CFC's east and we are looking at three rows of civs, SpApo is our SW neighbour!!! Which would mean that we have the bottom four teams (from Sullla's excellent ranking) as our neighbours! And would also explain why we have seen nothing coming our way from the SW, which in return makes settling stone city slightly less important from a pure settling race point of view.

It might be that Univers is in a similar position visavi WPC as we CFC are to us, ie very much ENE. The distance to CFC from our starting tile wes 18E 3S, and it might be something similar for Univers and WPC. And since both moved, this might have changed the relation.

The map is IIRC 84 tiles wide, and with 18 in horizontal distance between teams there'd be space for 4.5 teams or so.
What I'm most curious about is the relatively large amount of water that should be present on the map. Right now we have exposed circa 10% of the entire land area (2868 tiles) of the map, but less than 4% of the water.
Furthermore, I consider that forum views should be fluid in width

Sommer did kinda engineer the diplomatic situation last time such that he did all the conquering and expanding and others did all the teching for him.

Should we ask WPC how the war is going?
Saying "we noticed some heavy whipping and fluctuations in soldier points. How is it going?"
Also, wasn't CFC supposed to settle a city at the oasis 10 turns ago?
