I would highly recommend we play with the 1.8.0 patch, for which the Complete Collection (or everything up to & including Argos Naval Yard) is required.
Fortunately the game is just a few bucks these days, I've seen it sold for less than $10 lots of times, so it should be no problem to snag the latest version from Gamersgate, Steam, Impulse, or what-have-you.
Its $19 on steam.
It plays A LOT like a better version of Space Empires(I played III back in '98). They kinda went for what Moo3 did except you know... it wasn't a total travesty because SotS executed 'micro only as much as you want' instead of 'you can only macro.'

It's frequently on sale, though, on the various digital distributor sites. It was $7 a couple weeks ago on one of them, and then again on another one a couple days later.
It is somewhat amazing to watch a fleet of cruisers with stormers and bursters just knock other cruisers around like silly and one shot destroyers.

Especially if the other guys are lacking in ballistic armour and you have fire control or AI command sections available.
![]() Mind you if the other guys have Magnetoceramic or better, then not so much. Better pull out the AP drivers and Impactors, or switch to a non-ballistic weapon in that case. ![]()
Is fire control really that good? I've been using Strafe/BattleBridge/HammerHead almost exclusively.
I mean, I would combo that or deflector with Point Defense but I have no PD module in my tech tree, just green beams for PD.

Emitters would be better ersatz PD if you have them. I'm assuming you researched VRF; if you didn't, it's the prereq for PD. Later on you can hope to get other PD options such as interceptors and PD phasers, but there are other ways to deal with enemy seeking weapons, such as wild weasels and deflector shields. Jammers can also help, and you can always hide in an asteroid belt.
Fire control can be very useful to encourage inaccurate weapons to hit or to hit reliably with reasonably accurate weapons at long range. Here is a game where I used bursters in conjunction with AI command (super fire control + hammerhead) to cream a rival empire. Here is a game where I used fire control combined with impactors to annihilate enemies in similar fashion, from the edge of deep scan sensor range.
I suppose it would be very good for a super sniper ship.
I was not aware that light emitters doubled as PDs so I guess I will try that :D
