If you're really serious about running an 8 player PBEM I think you should arrange the time slots to cover two days. Playing a turn every day is unrealistic anyway.

Take a look at PBEM11 which has 7 players. At the slightest hiccup they average two turns a week.

I'm fine with almost anything, except with no vassals huts or events. I'd prefer not to have a mod,

I don't see why that should be needed .. besides we might get confused on which day we're supposed to be playing .. the spread looks like west coast USA [GMT-8] to Asia [GMT+8] which give 8*2hr slots at approximately the same local-time. The only snarl up is if there's a lot of 'Europeans' [ugh!] in the same time-zone, wanting to play at the same time.

Trust me, you might do fine in the early game with eight players but once turn-playing and diplomacy develop into more than just a few clicks you'll start seeing flying pigs more often than the civilization you command.

Trust me, you might do fine in the early game with eight players but once turn-playing and diplomacy develop into more than just a few clicks you'll start seeing flying pigs more often than the civilization you command.

It's looking like CTON is winning the day, so diplo's out the window .. that might speed things up

If you don't want a full CTON, what about something like PBEM 13 (I think that's the one?) - no out of game diplo. So you can still contact via the in-game diplo window but that way you don't have to spend tons of time writing emails or in chats and such
