You know, it might be cheaper to buy it on steam all together. Each game costs ~$6 after shipping from amazon and its $25 on steam.

There was a retail box for some of the expansions (for sure Born of Blood) but I don't know if there were boxes for all of them; I suspect perhaps not. The expansions are all available for download on multiple services including Gamersgate, Impulse, and Steam.
Argos Naval Yard should get your game up to version 1.7.2, IIRC, and from there you can download the 1.8.0 patch. You'll be missing a couple minor goodies from the Complete Collection, but not too much and nothing essential. I don't *think* you need to buy each expansion separately -- so long as you have the base game, Argos Naval Yard should catch you up -- but I can quickly double check and see if I can confirm that.
Certainly getting the Complete Collection and/or picking up Born of Blood and A Murder of Crows as well as Argos Naval Yard would be the safest way to go.

Ok, checking with forum tells me that you won't be able to install ANY without first installing BoB and AMoC. So, you either need SotS+BoB+AMoC+ANY, or you need Ultimate Collection + ANY, or you need Complete Collection.
Complete Collection is obviously simplest, but you may be able to get a deal going another route.

Thanks Zed. I didn't know there were so many pieces. Maybe I'll hold off on the SG for the moment and just try a vanilla game or two first on my own to see how it feels. (Between Final Fantasy 5 games of course. )

Well you can if you like, but I don't think you'll find the vanilla version to be very representative of the complete package. There have been massive changes to the game over that time (for the better, natch) and you will probably note a lot of stuff that you find annoying or missing that has in fact been addressed in subsequent versions of the game. Vanilla SotS was kinda beer-and-pretzels 4X compared to the much deeper later versions, especially with AMoC and following, and if you are looking for a good first impression, vanilla SotS isn't necessarily SotS putting its best foot forward.
Personally I would start with the complete version as otherwise you'll find yourself needing to unlearn a lot of stuff about the game in order to learn it all over again for the up-to-date version. The economy model in particular is superficially similar but in fact very different in the latest version as compared to the original version.

Well sometimes it's a good idea to spend a little money on a low-cost scouting expedition first, but when you find a nice low-hazard spot up for grabs, it can often be worth the investment to settle it ASAP, regardless of the start-up cost.

Alright, I've found the Complete Collection on play.com for 13.99 â¬, so I think I'll buy it there. I should have the game in about a week.
