Losing is Fun: Kandros Fir Dwarf Fortress [Khazad Spoiler Thread]

Okay should be simple enough (He says)

I'm assuming there is no password on here then?

Finished playing. Ichabod even left me some nice little signs for things to do. The Scout in the south moved further into the desert but managed to spot a tower in the distance, so i'll head there for some super sight next turn.

I also took some screen shots, so Ichabod i post pictures of everything. If i posted something would it ruin your big update you had planned? Not sure if you wanted to post past events tongue

Note: The Pictures are not fancy and don't seem to have taken well to being resized smaller. But they are still legible for the most part.

Capital Land

So as you can see Ichabod left me some nice tile markers as initial guidelines. The capital is up to size 4, reasonable in this wasteland, and is now trying for a Settler.

The Three Warriors in the Capital area are positioned evenly, One for the City, One on Worker Protection and one at the south to hook up with the settler I assume.

There are a few Dangers to watch out for, Griffins can be killers for early settler pushes and Ichabod has been marking when he sees the one currently circling the Dwarf Nation.

The Sign for the City is visable and a good enough second city to grab.

Scouting

The Warrior acting as a long range scout has wandered into a large desert in the south. Apart from luxery resources, not much here. It comes to mind that Springed Oasis and desert tiles means that this region could actually be the most profitable long term area found so far...

Domestic Information

The City stats for those who are interested. I could post a shot of the tech screen but this early that is pointless. Much easier to just list that the Dwarves have;
  • Agriculture
  • Crafting
  • Ancient Chants

And are currently getting education. So I assume the plan for an early start for a cottage economy won out in the end.

Foreign Information

I've provided the graphs, The Dwarves have contact with the Monks, Centuers and Fishermen so you get a nice comparison so far.

Here is also the Demeograph screen for a better all round overview

Everyone is even enough in GNP, but someone is way ahead on production, I'd assume someone has either got mysticism or Mining, either tech advantage doesn't bode well. The Golden Dwarves really need the money from the runes religion to themselves and many of the others could be eyeing it with their greedy little eyes...

With food we are a little ahead of the pack, i'd assume either the Kuriotates are in first and still growing their super city, Although maybe the lanun got really lucky. Against land like this if they got up some pirate coves they could really steam ahead.

I have no idea who the nation is with 5 food though. Maybe someone going production heavy...

...

It's far to early for a Hippus horse rush right? So far we are number one in soilders so no fear of that.

Any thoughts to add Haphazard1?

Just got a chance to check this, I have family visiting for the weekend and have not had much time.

The planned second city site is only 1 tile outside the capital's borders, correct? That should be safe enough against animals, as the settler can move and settle the same turn and not risk a griffon or bear attack. Otherwise more warriors would be requried to escort it safely.

The second city is going to be severely food limited until the animal food tiles can be improved. But there are not exactly a lot of better options around. frown And it expands in the direction of the desert river junction with the nice luxury resources. Spring would pretty much be required to make much of a city there, though.

Thanks for the screenshots and status update. thumbsup Good luck!

Yeah second city seems just like a land grab towards a better third city. With the amount of money the Dwarves need in their vaults for expansion i think settling will need to stop after three cities for awhile. At least untill Runes or markets are in.

Ichabod has me using the worker to build farms for the new city allready. At least with it being so close means it can start being productive quicker.

I think the kuriotates also start with water mana, along with the Lanun. So there could be some potential mana trades there.

With us "looser" dwarfs needing the money religion, i wonder which of the other players will be beeline the food religions...

I don't think i've done too well keeping the game speed going, doubt i'll get more then one or two more before Ichabod comes back. But at least things have continued along.

Scouting

Here is the latest scout picture. Not sure if it will change the eventual third city plan. Oasis's are good. But so far in the desert that no farms could be put down. Two incense could be useful for trade purposes... but then again if this map is all plains and desert maybe there is an abundance of those types of resources.

EDIT: Just checked back a few pages! there was this screenshot

As you can see there is a much better potential incense city to the south east. Along with it's dye, sheep and regents. That seems a better choice then a mad grab into the middle of the southern desert.

Hey Ravus!

I'm back. Thank you so much for playing the turns (and doing proper updates too - better than the original player :neenernee).

I'm able to play the turns from here.

Thanks again bow

Hi Ichabod, Good to have you back, I wasn't too good at keeping the speed up so i'm sure your fellow players will be happy to have you back.

I couldn't resist putting up the pictures! You were right about not much happening though. There are so many useful techs at this point that I think you did the right thing going for a cottage economy.

City Dots
[Image: civ4screenshot0074.jpg]

These were the only viable spots I could spot for cities. Yes i know I don't pick them but i figured a picture could prompt some discussion to start. There is space for another in the north-east for one or two more, but it would depend on whether hunting had been researched yet.

I actually like the spot that Hephazard mentioned a few pages back. 1W of the sheep. If animal husbandry is researched and a monument is instantly built it gets viable quickly.
  • 1 sheep
  • 2 Incense
  • 1 Regents
  • 2 Oasis
  • 2 River tiles
Spring adepts on the oasis, river and incense tiles would actually make it a very strong research city in my mind.

I'm assuming all the Dwarven city sights should have strong potential due to them benefiting from a smaller empire then most.

But i've never managed to feel comfortable playing the dwarves.

*shrug*

Any thoughts from the rest of the Dwarven Lurkers? smoke

Here is a different view of the dot map. The third city sight in the desert actually looks worse the longer I look at it, Can either of you see a way to switch it round to make it good both in the short term AND the long term?

Especially as True Dwarves allready start with Gold, so it's only useful for commerce or trade. (Yes a 10 commerce tile is REALLY tempting).

Map Speculation & Border Lines
[Image: civ4screenshot0076.jpg]

This is the view from the southern Scounting warrior from a different angle. You can see the edges of the Hippus... Not a brilliant discovery seeing as they are the ultimate rushers. At least the desert would slow down units... although seeing as the Hippus have four movement horses nothing slows them down ENOUGH to feel safe.

Also, of note, is that the layout of 2-incense and the oasis seems familiar. Its actually similar to the resources to the east of our city. different enough that i don't think the map is a reflection copy but it could mean everyone has similar starts. Or maybe just the Dwarves and the Hippus.

Should the scout make contact? Can they see him from their borders? I'm iffy on viewpoints...

How has the rest of the diplomacy gone? No information trades on the map? The Hippus... COULD... be a brilliant friend if they were pointed in a different direction. Nothing breeds trust and friendship like plotting murder after alll. And yes thats a cynical phrase! But true! :neenernee
