Sullla Wrote:Having everyone research the same techs is a no-brainer Is the only benefit here one of timing? If 5 teams research 5 different (equal value) techs that each take 10 turns, then by the end of turn 10, we learn 5 new techs all at the same time. If we gang up and all research the same tech, does it still take 10 turns to learn all the techs? If so, then the only benefit of ganging up is that you learn 1 tech every 2 turns and can use that tech (new units, worker actions etc) earlier.
Or is there some form of multiplier that I am missing.

I know. I'll go with it. I can make Wednesdays

There is no benefit for splitting up research (carryover works the same way). Therefore, it's better to have everyone researching together, so you have the techs come in faster and can use them sooner. In the above example, better to get a tech every 2 turns than get 5 together in 10 turns.
I have been unable to connect to the TeamSpeak server for the last day, and I suspect that it may be down right now. I will see if I can find out what's going on and if we need to look into a different server. (For all of you who emailed me, I'll get back to you at that time.)

Is there anything that I need to do in preparation of multiplayer games ... install additional software, etc. I visited the spy???? lounge, joined a game as America who was about to be wiped out by Rome and their preats but I lost connection. I also thought I saw knupp online but couldn't chat with him as he wasn't on my buddy list and I couldn't add him (something about a buddy profile).

You probably did see me Ruff. I'm in the lobby a lot playing ladder games. You don't need to download anything to play MP. To add somebody to your buddy list go to the lobby member list and right click on somebody's name. Add them to your buddy list. They will get a message asking them if they want them on your buddy list. Then you can pm eachother.
If you weren't able to add me it is probably problems with Game Spy. Buddy lists don't work every once in a while. Actually, game spy crashed a few days ago and all the games abruptly ended. I was in a teamer and we had to reload once it got back up. Since then everybody's buddy list has been screwed up.

Thanks to ME0003's generous hosting of the Teamspeak server, we should now be ready to go for Wednesday night. For all of you who emailed me earlier, I have responded with the password for the server. See if you can get it to work before Wednesday, and feel free to report any problems you might have here. Make sure to set up the "push to talk" feature, it's a lifesaver! (Literally, in Diablo sometimes. )
As far as where we'll meet on Wednesday night, I'll set up a game in the Multiplayer lobby a little before 8:00; the title will be "Realms Beyond MP" or something like that. It should be easy to find. I'll be watching for you in the lobby and will send you a private message with the password when I see you. (Don't worry, you don't really have to do anything special - just be in the lobby at 8 on Wednesday and I'll find you.) You will have to register for a Gamespy ID if you haven't already done that; if it's something substantially different than the name you go by here, you might want to let me know about that ahead of time.
And... that's all I can think of for now. Except we still don't know which civs we are going to play as in this game. If you have any preference whatsoever, speak now or forever hold your peace!

My preference is Axis .
Personal preference for Civ is Alexander if Axis or Mao if Allies.

I agree, Axis. If Axis, Toku. If Allies, pot luck.

Axis would be nice but I will miss the lack of fast workers - lol. I would be happy to play Italy unless anyone else wants the pleasure. Allies = lucky dip (aussie for 'pot luck').

If we take the axis, i'd prefer bismark or if not him louis. If we take the allies, i'd be happy with mao, gandhi or fdr
