In Adv 8, why stonehenge?

I'm curious to know why so many people built stonehenge in Adventure 8? i finished later than most, yet didn't build since, us being Creative, we didn't need it for border pops or anything.

If I had to guess; an early source of Great Propet points to drive an early shrine or extra religion ... at least that's often a reason I go for it.

Plus with Stone on hand, it's almost a waste not to.

For me simply put- for the Great Person Points. Stone + Industrious made it like a 7-8 turn builld (I don't remember). I grabbed 2 of the 3 early religions (Hinduism and Judaism) and both were in Paris, so besides just the usefulness tech wise and grabbing the later religions etc. I had plenty of uses for Great Priests. Had the game been Monarch or higher, I would not have built the henge, I would have concentrated on expanding and getting Pyramids and HG in Paris instead, but on Noble I like to detour for stuff that is certainly not necessary, but nice to have.

Well I tried to get it but failed, which might well have been the best outcome.
It is interesting to note that refunds are an extremely good way to generate cash, in the case of Industrious + stone, each hammer "on the land" becomes 2.5 hammers in the wonder. When it comes time to refund hammers are converted to gold at a 1:1 ratio. That means a tile like a plains hill mine (4 hammers) actually generates 10 gold/turn, that is much better than any commerce tile can yield in that era (especially since there's an absence of gold multipliers).

So in short, I pretty much always build wonders if I have the bonus(es), either the wonder itself will be useful (GPP points and other benefits) or I'm running a souped up uber-wealth.

Of course in my game I was going cottageless which made solid hammer:gold conversions a Very Good Thing.

As I love to play Industrious Leaders - I'm a wonder addict - I have the same approach to it like Blake. A good thing will come out of it, it's either the wonder or the gold. There are several wonders that I never try to build - Hagia Sophia for instance - and there are wonders that I'm always attempting. Stonehenge is one of 'em. It's relatively cheap and guarantees you a Great Prophet. One thing I love to do (especially when I missed out on the early religions) is building the 'Henge and then lightbulb Theocracy with it, founding Christianity. When not being creative the 'Henge pays for itself alone due to border pops. I try to build it in nearly every single game.

Interestingly, I think it is possible to get both the Wonder and some gold....

This actually happened to me with a Spaceship part, but I don't see why it wouldn't apply to World Wonders; I had been building my third Thruster for several turns in one city, but realised it was inefficient to build it there and so switched it to another location (of course to do this you have to remove it from the queue entirely). When I finished my final Thruster, I got a message that the original city with the part-built Thruster could not continue work on it and gave me some gold....
