You can definitely cripple someone's economy with too many units if you're not careful, but sometimes that's actually the best strategy. Best to ask them what they'd like. (Nolan used to gift everyone a million units in our test games; it was very nice, but I often wished she would keep some of them for herself!)
That happened to me in the first RB multiplayer game, and I managed to lose about ten units while walking to attack because they went on strike! That's only happened once though, so it's usually pretty safe to gift the units. If you're assembling a big stack, you should probably keep it so that you don't kill the person's economy, but if you're just sending over some mixed support units, it's nice to gift them so that they can easily coordinate their efforts.
Quote:And a general comment - you guys barely talked at all on Teamspeak last week. This is a far cry from my experiences with Cyrene, who keeps up a constant stream of offbeat commentary, and Sirian, who can't go five minutes without making everyone groan over a horrendous pun. Don't do anything that makes you uncomfortable, but I felt like I was talking to myself a lot last week. Feel free to speak up.
Indeed, being on Teamspeak with your friends is one of the best parts of Civ4 MP ! In fact, a lot of people usually sit around on the server I'm usually on even when they're not in a game, which I can attest is fun to do as well.

After nearly an hour of connectivity issues again last night, we finally got the game underway! In a slight modification of the concept, we are playing 5 vs. 5 instead of 6 on 6. Dreylin was unable to connect to the rest of us last night, but we had an AI in for his spot (and AI Isabella didn't do anything TOO stupid, fortunately...) Hopefully we can figure out how to solve the "Mystery of the Comcast Router" before this upcoming Wednesday.
Blake: Since we had heard nothing from you, we went ahead and started the game without your spot. I'm sorry about that, but there's no surer way to kill off a group venture than to keep postponing it. I'm not sure we could have held the group together if we weren't going to start until the 19th. You have my apologies, and I hope we can catch you for the next multiplayer game.
I'll write up something today and put it up on the website. Long story short: we caught some horrible breaks of luck, the AIs razed two cities attacking with archers at insane odds, they rushed two wonders with Great Engineers before 1000BC - but we're still hanging in there. Looks like it's shaping up to be a good game too.

You don't count letting a lone archer pillage all her improvements while her axe watched from Madrid? :-)
And yeah, those were some 2 insane archer wins by the AI, not to mention the apparent poppage of Metal Casting from a hut.
I will be out of town starting tomorrow and going through all of next week. Originally I thought I would have Internet access but it looks like I won't. I will post to get a one week replacement. Though I wouldn't be surprised if you guys finished it off next week, if it's still around in 2 weeks I will be back in the saddle.
I will open another thread looking for a replacement

I should start playing MP... I'd help a lot with my gameplaying. Succession games as well. The only problem is that I can never commit to a length of time. I also cannot seem to figure out a way to bypass my router without disconnecting my other two computers first. I'll see if I can get around to doing something though.

Week 1 lead to all sorts of connection problems when we finally tried to start the game. It seems that I was one of the players causing the problems. My router set up is ...
cable modum -> VoIP Router -> Wireless Router -> PC
According to this link having two routes does cause problems. For week 2, I plugged directly into the back of my PC from the VoIP Router ...
cable modum -> VoIP Router -> PC
I also edited the router configuration to forward port 2056 (as per above link). I didn't have any troubles linking into the game on Week 2 (and as far as I could tell, no-one had trouble linking to me).
We also tried playing direct via an IP address. The way IP addresses (IIRC) and routers work is that the router is given a unique IP address (it could be static or it could change every time the router is turned on - ie set by the IP). This IP address is used by the rest of the internet to refer to the router. PCs connected to the router get a different IP address (usually starts with 192 or 168 ) and this signifies an internal network. Information travels from the PC via this IP address to the router then out to the Internet using the router IP address. Information going the other way works in reverse. The router (somehow) sends the information to the correct PC (don't ask me how).
The other option we could try (and posts on the forum suggest it is a good option) is setting up a Virtual Network. The software people are recommending is found at http://hamachi.cc/. I downloaded it late Wednesday and it appears to be fairly easy to use.
One person creates a network, gives the network address and password to the others in the group who then all connect to the network. At that point, we kick off CIV and play a game based on a LAN (local area network). If we can get in contact with the network, then we should be able to play the game.
If anyone is around this Sunday and wants to give it a try, pls let me know. Best contact is via Ruff_Hi @ Yahoo.com or on messanger for instant chat.

Just to clarify: anyone who is not planning on making our game this upcoming Wednesday night needs to post in this thread. I would like to continue running the game even if we're short a person or two, but an exact count would be best. I'd rather not deal with substitutes for a single session; if someone has to drop out permanently, we can explore the possibilty of replacement players then.
I have not looked into the virtual network that Ruff suggested (haven't had time), but if we have as many connection problems this week as we've had in the past, I'll be sure to explore it and decide on a ruling for the group.

Wed is free but I will be at a hotel (wireless internet access) so I have no control over router settings, ability to connect, etc. I guess that is a "I don't know if I will be able to make it or not". FYI - My civ has no password protection on it. If someone does play as my Civ, can you ask them to gift the Praet in Washington away - that was going to be my first action this week.

Well, I'll be there to (hopefully) save Spain from the ravages of AI mismanagement. I havetweaked a few more settings from my Firewall / Router / etc. so hopefully there won't be any problem this week ... I also found a loose connection in my Cable wiring, so maybe that was interferring.
See you guys tonight.

The only person who has definitely said they cannot make it tonight is regoarrarr, so we are on as usual. (Assume each week that we are playing unless you hear otherwise.) I will be hosting the game directly once again (no Gamespy); the IP address is 68.33.89.25 for those who didn't catch it or write it down last time.
