Scammed :(

Hello everyone, I will get right to the point. Yesterday A guy that I had been talking to and doing missions with for about a week told me he had an extra factions key, I told Him i needed one but only had 30k. He said we would give it to me for 30k np, H was even askin about the guild and joining it. He took the 30k and the cdkey was faulty of course frown well now im pretty much broke again and am VERY frustrated beyond words. His name is S Snastydfb. I am notifying everyone here to watch out for him. Thank you for your time in reading this.

A couple of notes for everyone:

Meverah does not yet have Factions, can't get it at the moment for financial reasons and would love to get it. The whole Dragonfest event thing is just salt in the wound as far as I can see. This is essentially why I was asking in game if people had any spare preorder keys, seeing as I had a jade orb surplus and figured there was a possibility that those keys might work, at least long enough to bag a mask and have a look around. Somehow I doubt it, but it was worth a shot.

Well, it's too late to say, "Um that sounds like a scam." frown All I can say is, call this a learning experience. Scams work sometimes on naïveté, sometimes on greed. This might sound harsh, but in your case it seems your greed for the new chapter blinded you to any negative consequences stemming from handing over something you valued to a player who you had only been in communication with for a week. frown

Next time you cross paths with someone asking for something it might pay to relay the 'deal' on the guild and alliance channels. I might be sounding a little elitist here, but many of us have spent enough time in Guild Wars and Diablo etc. to sniff out a shady deal. Some of us have probably had close contact with past victims or may have been the victim ourselves. Trusting a player you've communicated with for a week with a gift of 30K gold and expecting a Factions key in return is pretty dodgy to outside appearances.

Another thing that struck me before you got scammed was the character name. You might have picked up on a little aloofness from me when you were talking about this guy interested in joining our guild. Well, part of my cautious responses were due to reading "S Snastydfb". You remember I asked what it stood for and said "Spiteful Spirit nasty death from..."? Right after I asked that and just before you reported that he had told you it didn't stand for anything, I mentally filled in the blank with Spiteful Spirit Nasty Death From Behind".

I don't normally read so much into names, but I was certain I didn't want to throw out 100g without first partying up with this one.

One last thing to note. In my job showing movies to people it's easy to screw up and mangle a show. A thing to remember is a projectionist is not flying a passenger aircraft and we won't have snffed out 200 lives from a mistake.

The modified version for GW goes like this: You lost 30K. What is it really? It's game gold. A bit of farming to recoup and NOTHING ELSE LOST BUT YOUR PRIDE. It's going to piss you off now, but you still have your characters and you still have your contacts (who you've had much fun with in the past). When you want to take advantage of it, you will also still have the rest of your new guild for more recreational fun. thumbsupDon't worry about the 30K. Now that the Factions novelty has worn off we'll probably start turning back to FoW groups and SF and if you join us in those you'll soon find that 30K accumulates before too long when you start selling Obsidian Shards or green item drops. 8)

I wouldn't make a deal like that with someone I didn't know in real life.

I don't know why, but I'm still somewhat surprised when I see people falling for stuff like this. Even if you have no idea what the GW economy is like, you should know that no one would ever give away something as valuable as a CD-Key for an in-game item, at least not in GW where there are no "super uber godly" items that sell for $1000+ on ebay (back when Lord of Destruction came out, someone sold a Cruel War Pike of Evisceration on ebay for that much). People sell 100k on ebay for $5 real money (or thereabouts, it's been a while since I read what the loot is going for) so 30k would go for what? $2? Do you really think someone will hand over something worth $40+ for that? A little common sense goes a long way.

If you haven't done so already, you should probably report the person to ANet, you won't get your money back, but they'll look into it. If you have a screen shot of the person saying they'd sell you the key then you can send that to them and the person will more than likely be banned.

Pre-order keys gave access to Cantha for the head-start period (which lasted about a week due to CE mishaps). The devs have already stated that they will no longer give access to Cantha for any reason. All you can get from a pre-order key now are the free weapons.

I'd go a step further and say I wouldn't make a deal like that with anyone, not even a sibling.

Heh, well Wyrm I would hope there's a level of trust between siblings that wouldn't get sold out for the price of an online computer game account, but that's neither here nor there.

These things happen; scammers even manage to pull off many scams because they are good at earning your trust. Experience can go a long way towards avoiding scams, but there's always a new bag of tricks ready to go. Don't feel bad about it.

Having said that, trading accounts for in-game gold is totally against the EULA. You should not have been doing it. RB is a member of ULGG, as are ZoS, and we are honor-bound to uphold the EULA as presented by ArenaNet. I encourage you to, next time you get scammed, at least let it happen under legitimate circumstances. :-/

Now there's a line that begs to be quoted out of context if ever there was one. 8)
