PBEM5I Rematch: scooter's thread

You actually haven't missed anything, we just slowed it down over the weekend. But I just played the next turn, so here's a few screenshots. First, his modern armor in the north backed off:

I wonder if that's at all related to this development:

He's moving up a settler... Hmm. I have lots of workers in the area as well as the bulk of my military (and my planes) so I could potentially try to raze it if he's not careful. We'll see what happens. Also, aluminum city will be founded next turn:

This is the spot with the odd-looking grassland wheat. I'll make sure border pop happens in 1T, so then the next turn I'll hook aluminum. I need to slide a few more workers up here to get the city started quickly.

Well aluminum city got founded finally:

I built culture for 1T so borders popped at EoT. Also, thanks to rails, I have about 6 workers there ready to start improving next turn (can swing some more up the turn after that) so the aluminum should be hooked next turn and I can start building some modern armor... and hopefully cause some trouble for Dazed. See, he decided to kick into builder mode:

So that's what his modern armor was doing. Guess he was too chicken to settle up at the middle! And at the south, as I expected:

Hey! I'M the builder here! That's my job! This copy-cat is gonna have to pay. wink

I also had a massive amount of overflow in my SE corner city so that everything could be built in 1T and hammers were going to be wasted... I struggled with what to build there as I need planes more than Mechs but Mechs are more expensive (thus less hammers wasted), then I realized theres ONE thing that's more expensive than the most expensive military unit.......

Settlers.

Yeah, that makes sense. rolleyehuhrolleye

But yes, I chose settler next. I'm going to try to build it west-ish of the aluminum city. I'm debating on where to place it... See, I'd like to get a 3rd port to really control the seas, but the drawback is that it means that's another city vulnerable to boating/forking. Going to need to think that one through.

We may be taking a bit of a break (or playing a max of a turn a day) for the next 3ish days, so I figured with Dazed not online, now was as good a time as any to do a fuller update. This is for the same turn as I just posted about, I just re-opened the save and took some extra pictures - mostly demographic stuff to see what it looks like. First though, one look at the actual game. This is where I"m thinking about putting my next city:

Thoughts on this spot:

1) No river so no levee

2) Despite no levee, still a very good production spot.

3) Misses two food resources, but there's no real good way to divide things evenly. It's either coast + fish or the north foods, and settlers are so expensive that there's no way I'm splitting it into two sites. Plus, fish + grass cows + floodplains (watermill) gives a very impressive food surplus, so I can get the city up and running very quickly. I'm finding that often the bottleneck for cities is food, as it's most important to get a city working the maximum good tiles ASAP. All the workshops in the world mean nothing until the city grows big enough to work them.

4) Major drawback is that Dazed can easily fork 3 cities with his navy, which means I"d have to commit to more land defense than I'd like.

Something I realized today as I was going through options is that Missile cruisers can carry as many units as a transport, making transports useless. Dazed of course brought his landing party at me on a transport. If it had been a Cruiser, I might've been in trouble. Let's hope he doesn't figure that out anytime soon wink.

Double-checked as this seemed odd to me, and apparently this only applies to missiles. Nevermind!

Aluminum is hooked, so some Modern Armor get put into production:

I need to get some Jet Fighters into commission too for intercept duty. Also, little cultural oddity that I thought was really strange:

Um, okay, I guess I get the silver already. Doesn't mean much to me, though I could potentially dial down on the culture slider as a result so that's good I guess. Also, I did some rethinking of the NW port that I'm considering:

Spot A is the spot I talked about last night. Spot B is where Dazed founded. Some thoughts:

1) Dazed's spot divides the land much more cleanly

2) Dazed's spot has much more junk water tiles

3) Dazed's spot is more vulnerable. My spot can be defended by parking Navy 1SW of my proposed spot. His would have to defend against two water tiles, meaning he can't defend it by defending the coast.

4) Given the cost of settlers, I don't think an extra northern city for tundra deer and unirrigated wheat will really matter... The game may be over before that matters.

Overall, I'm stil

Also, at EoT I have 5 missile cruisers. Next I'd like to get at least one carrier for bombers and then I'll eventually slot in transports, but those would obviously be built last.

Finally remembered that forts can hold planes... So I decided to move up and get visibility on Dazed's capital and surrounding lands:

So on T426, I got a look:

3 Cruisers and a Carrier. No boats in his other city, just 2 modern armor. For comparison sake:

So I'm ahead. That's nice.

T427 in quickly... And he destroyed my fort. Whoops smoke

Bombers have a range of 8, and that fort was 7 tiles away... So in order to do this, I'm going to need to get rid of a workshop or something which I don't want to do. Potentially I could just put my planes on a carrier and stick it out in the water and scout that way. An idea... Anyways, I decided to do some destruction of my own:

Let's kill that watermill just to be annoying. It failed the first try so my second bomber did the trick.

Oh, this was another picture from T426 that I forgot to include. Just a better shot of his land:

He needs more workers.
