[SPOILERS] mostly_harmless plays Sury of Greece

So that's me for this game, by far the most ugly face in CIV:

So with the filler stuff out of the way, I will wait for my start to post some thoughts.

Here is the initial plan behind the pick.
I just love creative so that is a given. Plus it takes care of the happy faces with the cheap theatres and colloseums.
Expansive looks interesting for teh cheaper worker and work boats. Since I expect at least some water (ideally a coastal start) from the chosen map script, cheap workboats look good.
So, that combination makes it Sury.

Then I looked at some synergies for the cheap buildings. Greek Odeons (colloseums with more happy faces). And of course Greece starts with Fishing, which plays along with cheap work boats.

The Phalanx is an ok UU, I guess.

Now for the provided starting position.
Full of Resources indeed.

First thing I noticed, I don't start with a scout. Meh. Looks like the scout was moved off Hunting and onto Animal Husbandry. So much for the strategy to grab early huts with the starting Scout. cry

Then there is a glaring map edit with the river skimming the coast. Nothing good or bad, just a bit ugly. lol

But I have the desired coastal start, alas no seafood in sight.

Furthermore, two camp resources (deer and furs) that get enabled with AH. Riverside gems for a strong early commerce tile, 2/1/7 and irrigated corn.

Worker first seems like a good bet.

(note: Some starts were changed, and this was purely for balance and had no interest in messing with anyone's plans.)

The corn moved 1N. Hmmm.

Settle 1W of the starting position, trading coast/ocean tiles for riverside grasslands. No sea food in sight, which mean I cannot leverage my Fishing/Expansive combo. Ah well.
Work the Deer for a 8 turns worker. Research set to Mining, to get the Gems tile hooked up.
Warrior moves west, goes for the hut.

Potential showstopper:
Looks like the map edit (the coastal river) is not only ugly but creates a problem as well.

With Fishing as my starting tech I should be able to build a workboat, right?
Looks like the game does not realize the city has access to water.
This sucks big time, obviously, as I will not only be prevented from building water units in this city (on the whole water body???) but also presumably no coast-related buildings (lighthouse, harbor, GLH). And no it is not a fresh water lake. either.

I don't think I want to play with that restriction.

I have emailed scooter about it.

I'm not taking the piss but are your starting techs ok? You definitely have Fishing? I realsie that you should have it, but it may not be there for some reason or other.
