@Griselda,

Ah, you're paying for a second i.p. address... well yes a switch will work fine and you can use
(exactly) two computers. With the router you only need and pay for one i.p. address, but can use
as many computers as you want simultaneously. Only one at a time can act as a server on a given port/game. With no port forwarding your protection vs virus/attacks goes WAY up over the switch
configuration. To act as a server, you'll need to follow the suggestions of others and set up port
forwarding (or if you have a firewall setup you're comfortable with on the server, designate it as 'DMZ' for unlimited no-hassle serving)

@Pete,

With my company and friends we've had nothing but grieve with Earthlink. One friend got two *different*
viruses within a 40 min span from one logon. Another likewise got hit with one despite very little 'on' time. They both thought that getting hit with a virus (due to sloppy updating practices) was something only likely with cable, not dial-in. With Earthlink I would suggest that a software firewall (e.g. Zone Alarm) be used, and most definitely stay up-to-date with Windoze updates. (I'm equally sure you know this, but thought I would point it out for the sake of other Earthlink / dial-in users B) )

PS- BTW, anyone else going for Detroit?

I love the way the Pistons play ball, and it would be nice to see LB win a pro championship. But, I grew up throwing no-look passes to myself and then shooting sky hooks... Lakers all the way!

Hope you enjoy the new place.

When I had an account with them, I didn't get any virii, but tons of spam. The filters weren't worth a darn, and support told me the only solution was to only accept email from approved addresses. (That totally fouls up many email lists if you aren't on digest.)

Hi CelticHound,

I've tried something similar, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Or rather it works for something but not others. I did find this. I've got some cleaning up to do on my system, then I'll give it a try. For whoever is in the same boat, I'll post the results later this week.

Hey Pete,

Were you using the Linksys Router that CH mentioned, or the PC that you built out as a router? I have a Linksys switch/router like CH mentions and it works great for hosting games and joining games outside the LAN. The best thing about it, IMHO, is that you can have a LAN without any external hookup at all, since the Linksys has DHCP built into it as well.

Hi,

Using a PC as a router -- it's a pretty old system ('95 or thereabouts) and switches and routers were pretty expensive back then. So it is based on three hubs with the smarts coming from PCs (old ones that I had anyway, so they were free.)

I promised pictures, so here they (finally) are. Little Gris insisted on getting into every shot. This was not what I intended since I planned to post them, but I figured in the long run I'll be glad I have her in those pictures. smile

Here's our old house:
[Image: oldhouse.jpg]
It's a funky little house made up almost entirely of additions. I have a lot of good memories from the house, and really hadn't planned on moving for years to come.

However, we had the opportunity to move into this house:

So, here we are! The house is nice, but here's what's *really* nice about the place:
[Image: yard1.jpg]
That's taken in the backyard. Isn't it fantastic? Over to the right, you can just barely see the white post to the back deck, and the side of the greenhouse. The deck is covered in star jasmine, clematis, and climbing roses. :wub:

Here's a shot of the backyard looking away from the house. You can see the "wall of green" that surrounds the yard pretty well in that shot. The amazing thing is how many different types of things are growing back there. Yes, there is a dead patch, but that's only because potted plants used to line that curve. I'd like to get some more nice potted plants for that area, but really right now our focus is on moving, and figuring out what we can afford now that we're living over here.

The place is nice, very nice. I don't know that I'm "ready" to take care of a house like this quite yet, but you have to jump on opportunities like this when they come along. smile

That is a good looking house.

The scenery is amazing. All of those trees and outdoor life; it certainly looks beautiful.

The front of the house looks great surrounded by those trees.

It is hard to tell how much room you have in the back, but have you any plans for a small garden? I suppose you could always make more room.

Thank you for posting the pictures.

How about them apples? They say they do not fall far from the tree, and that one can spoil the whole bunch. Well I say we may not all be rotten, but we are all spoiled.

Hi,

That's a beautiful place with a beautiful *cough*jungle*cough* yard in back, I hope you will be very happy in it for years to come.

I see Grislette was "Fully Rested" in that last picture wink
