Steam Summer Sale has begun

For all those looking for games to play, Steam's summer sale has started, and there's some seriously impressive deals right now. Every day has daily deals with individual games selling for very low prices, and there are many publisher packs that have a large bundle of games, like here:

Could be interesting. This is as good a time as any to take back the bad things I was saying about Steam over in the Jamestown thread. I remember it being a horribly intrusive DRM fest of crippleware around the time of Counterstrike, but it does seem pretty well behaved nowadays.

There are still some questionable issues left in the docket (offline mode has always been a bit flaky for me, and I don't know if they'll let you update game A while playing game B yet), but for the most part, Steam is as good as it gets for DD.

If you don't care about minor data mining, don't priate, have a good ISP so you can always be online and don't care about bending the rules in case Steam goes down or something like happens -- there are no drawbacks to using Steam. It also has many legit features it has to.

You can just use a set of dummy Steam DLL (tells the program everything steam related is successful) if you bought it legit.

KOTOR is practically free, just 2 euros.
I really recommend to pick it up if you haven't played it yet and enjoy story-driven RPG's

There are so many games, and so many genres - half the question is what style of game you enjoy. But yes, the other half is whether it's a good game with Star Wars for some extra theme, or a bad game trying to redeem itself with branding. There's definitely both in the Star Wars universe. In my opinion, the more the game depends on Star Wars as an integral part of the game, the more likely it is to be good. If it's an RPG or Jedi game that makes no sense if you take out Star Wars, it'll probably be good. If it's an RTS where you could just change the sprites and end up with something that's still a game, look somewhere else.

With one exception - if a game directly copies something from the movies, stay away . Pod racing is an example.

RPGs - KOTOR is pretty much universally loved (I liked it greatly myself). KOTOR2 is polarizing - people seem to love or hate it, I haven't found many people indifferent. I didn't like this one, but I've known people with opinions I respect finding it great.

Fighter sims - TIE Fighter is good if you can make it run on a modern computer; otherwise, the later the game, the better the graphics etc. I liked X-wing Alliance, myself. Only try these if you have a joystick.

FPS/Jedi - I don't know much about these. I had a roommate who played through almost all of them, though, and enjoyed them. The only one I remember in particular was Republic Commando, which he thought was brilliant and way too short - but maybe a bargain bin price would alleviate that.

4X - I'm not a fan of Star Wars Rebellion. It's ok, but compared to SoTS or MOO, it just doesn't hold a candle. It's the only game I've played where I thought it would speed up if it were turn-based, and a 4X that's only got two sides is kinda boring. The interface was pretty boring, as was a good chunk of the strategy.

I don't like RTS's, so I can't really comment on whether theirs are any good. I doubt it, though.

Lego - these are surprisingly fun little games. They look so stupid, but they're actually fun to play.
