Sticky Reporting / Discussion

I commented in the Epic 8 info thread that I really liked the sticky post method of report. You could tell at a glance when new reports were available to read and you could also tell where you were up to in the reading of the reports. Since then, I have thought about it and I think that we should have TWO (2) sticky posts ...

1) One that contains links to the actual reports
2) The second one for discussion of the game - this will keep the report post clean

I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

I think I prefer the normal way or reporting actually. The Epic 8 way needs everyone to use threaded comments, but I find that option to be confusing to me, especially when not everyone else uses them. So when everyone has their own thread you know what game someone is referring to when they comment.

I'm torn - I've been actually commenting some more with lots of reports in the same thread (somehow it's intimidating to comment on a completely blank new thread unless I've "something to say", whereas if there's a couple of dozen posts already I'm more comfortable with little remarks ...).

But I agree with sooooo that it's getting awfully confusing - especially the Egypt thread as about half of us are threading replies & half aren't. And the half that aren't aren't always signifiying who/what they're talking about, so you can be following a conversation & have a complete non-sequiter that's actually relevant to the report n posts down the line you've not got to yet wink

So I like it in principle, but I'm finding the practice isn't quite living up to the theory ...

Yes the threding is a problem (and I have misplaced some responses too) but I prefer the sticky method nevertheless.

The other one is such a mess with belated Epic reports creeping between adventure-reports mixing with Summaries, interesting Discussions being randomly placed in various threads etc etc.

This is exactly what I thought reading the sticky.

I'm not sure what report method I prefer, but if stickies, I definitly would prefer two stickies over one.

I personally prefer the old way. I think its more organized like that and its easier to reply to certain or specific players. The threaded option is too confusing and disorganized in my opinion.

I really prefer the old way.

1) I have a problem with all sticky threads being marked as read after reading any of them.

2) Trying to follow comments on the indivudual games was to confusing.

3) It seems like a lot less comments on an indivudual game.

In my typical "Compromise" way, I have a mixed opinion. For this particular event--with so many players divided unevenly into really different games--I think the multiple stickies was a good way of organizing the reporting for the event.

For normal RB events, I prefer the old method.

But I do see a role for the sticky thread in normal RB events: "Comments about the Metagame" or "Dialogue with the Game Sponsor" or something like that.

In most events, it seems like a couple of issues develop: Civil Service Slingshot might start being considered a "Bad Thing". Or Sirian will disclose insights about the design of the game and comments about how they unfolded in the event. Or someone will reveal insights about how the AI works and how certain features of the game--which seemed random--can be better explained by a general principle.

I find myself at least skimming the posts in every game that gets two or three pages worth of comments (even if I've already read and commented on the game) just to see if I've missed an interesting line of discussion.

While some comment on these issues are appropriate for an individual game, I'd like to see a single place to read about or discuss insights from the sponsor, or discussion about gameplay issues used in the event. Maybe the info thread is the most appropriate place for this--and thus a new sticky thread wouldn't be necessary--but it seems like the info thread is effectively considered closed when the event closes.

But if nothing changed, I think I'd still be a pretty happy guy. smile

4) There are comments in the threads that I have no clue what game they are refering to.

What do you mean with that? If I read sticky about Japan the sticky for Mali is still marked as unread.
