Mod approval discussion wanted. Bugfix / Minor balance changes.

I don't really want to get caught up in this argument (I'm not a fan of mods, for what it's worth) but Blake's comparison here is fallacious. Every game has random elements, from combat to what comes out of goody huts. Unless you're playing a game like chess, that's always going to be the case. But once we begin implementing gameplay mods, players actually cease to play the same game. They are operating under a different ruleset, which is not at all the same as getting a bad combat result. Apples and oranges. I personally don't think that's the direction we should be heading in (I'm sure we can find better solutions to gameplay imbalances).

For what it's worth, I also think there's way too much attention being focused on competition at the moment. If someone pops an early resource, so what? Our games are supposed to be for fun. Heck, more than half of our events are unscored. Relax and just enjoy the events. I've played in 27 Realms Beyond games between Civ3 and Civ4 without ever winning a scored game, and I certainly don't feel like I wasted my time. smile

There are a number of mods like this ...
I'd be happy to put these into a combined mod with options to turn various ones off or on but only if there is a) some demand for them and b) review of the results and comments during the mod approval process.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

I'm arguing that the whipping bug is basically a series of dice rolls - if you don't exploit it. On average the result will be about the same as if the bug wasn't there. You can get better results by exploiting it and eliminate all the low rolls.

Agreed. Heck, I even want to use a bugfix which would impair my performance, just because it makes the game more enjoyable for me with my perfectionist/ocd tendancies.

I had not seen any of the mods that you put up there. I am just don't really care that much. But I really like the first two mods here, they are really helpful and eliminate a lot of the back and forth from the tech trading screen to the science screen to determine things like who could research what etc. They just make it easier. I would support these 2. The others don't do much for me *shrug*.

I fall into the "willfully ignorant" category for the whipping bug: I know it exists and I'm trying my damnedest to avoid learning how to exploit it. Unfortunately, simpy the act of playing and noticing hammers left and population killed in whipping is gradually teaching me how to exploit it. I'm quite annoyed that Firaxis hasn't fixed this problem, and I'd use an optional mod so I can play without having to think about the whipping bug.

What's the tech overflow bug? This sounds like something I need to learn to avoid.

Ctrl-H to select damaged units would be nice.

I think that 4 and 5 go too far: they fundamentally change the nature of the strategies you want to use. I think they'd destroy the comparability of games with and without them implemented. Firaxis needs to patch the vanilla version of the game.

I know we won't see that. Once a new game is out, that becomes the latest patch. Civ4 original has seen its last patch.

Maybe not, but I think we should.

At the moment, I'm rather preoccupied. Rules changes or new mods or anything requiring my in-depth attention is unlikely in the short term. My current goal for RB-Civ is to get an event or two ready before Sunday.
