I won't have a game ready for tonight.

A couple of people have offered suggestions for events, but I have not had the focus to give them consideration as yet. We are still stuck in the limbo of not having any truly solid builds to work with. ... The unexpectedly low interest in Warlords seems to point us back toward v161 for the moment. I do not have any magic bullets for its problems, though. Complex variants, wild or involved scoring, etc, can lead to some exploration, but it is still likely that the known best paths will be adapted in some way to cover them.

I intended to carry the Epics Redux to Epic Twelve, The Gauntlet, and then halt the replays and open things wide. ... The community seems to have settled on the notion that Epic Speed is its favorite, and that Adventures in general are less desirable just for not being on Epic speed. ... I may shelve the Adventures series as a result. I think it served us well, but its time seems to have passed. I will also halt the redux now. It's been a year, and I never imagined in my wildest dreams that we'd post only nine Epics over a whole year. We have lost a lot of time to patching and expansion efforts and builds that, incredibly, have gone not as well as their Civ3 counterparts in terms of moving the game forward from its initial state.

Epic Ten will be something new.

I will work to come up with an event in the next few days. Until then...

Should we then be re-opening the discussion of variant rules to handle Slavery and the whip? I don't think we ever reached a consensus....

Really? I know a few people have stated their preference for epic speed, but I like normal speed just as much. My favourite events so far have all been adventures, not epics. Here's one person speaking in favour of the adventures.

EDIT: Maybe a poll is in order?

I'm not sure how valid this statement is: some players skipped the Warlords games because they felt they lacked highly involved variants, but said they'd play Warlords if the variant appealed.

There were 3 reports for Adv 16 and 5 for Warlords One. Warlords Two was probably that 'one game too many' for the time of year.

As for the Adventures, I prefer the extreme ones and would most give of them a try. A gentle adventure would have to match well with my tastes for me to play it.

I don't think I've said so before, but I greatly prefer normal speed. It just takes so long to get anything done in an Epic game. I check and double-check everything almost every turn, so Epic games take 50% longer in real time without any remotely commensurate payoff in strategic depth.

Most players seem to like Epic speed because the window of effectiveness for each military unit is significantly longer. I disagree; Civ 3 already had enough instances of just stopping at cavalry or artillery or tanks to take over the world. I'd rather see the game continue to progress even during the foregone conclusion stages.

Just MHO. Epic speed is unlikely to be a game-breaker for me, but it may lead to some unfinished games.

My preferences are for Epic speed. I play 100% of my SGs at that pace, and I find the other speeds awkward at this point.

I would play vanilla or warlords. I now own warlords, so I can play those events now.

I played mainly on epic speed in solo games and SGs too, but I did quite enjoy some of the adventures. I think I would just refrain from playing an AW game on normal speed.

Concerning warlords vs CIV, I strongly prefer the game where there are likely to be more players and it seems like vanilla is the right candidate at the moment. It would be great if we were able to use a mod to fix the whipping bug though. Unlike the balance issues which are debatable and where no consensus has been reached, fixing the whipping bug is straight forward.

Could Epic 10 be something religious? Like playing against all the religous leaders or something in the context.

Sirian is already busy and is working hard to get something prepared. It is probably not a good idea to say "Sirian maybe do this, or this". I am usually content with anything. I do prefer Epic speed, but I can live with Normal speed too. It is impossible to please everyone, so I've just learned to have fun with whatever is thrown my way. smile

I play games on both Epic and Normal speed. I usually play on Normal because I'm impatient, but I sometimes play Epic too, especially when I'm interested in a game with more warfare.
