SG lurking etiquette

I don't mind lurkers generally (it's fun having an audience), it's just bad manners for a spectator to post more than the actual players. Team D's thread appears to have been cleaned up by a moderator last night anyway, thanks.

thanks for your thoughts and perspectives folks. i did figure i'd get about as many different opinions as responses!

as for SF, well, i'd really like to believe that he's not actually a 12-year-old kid, just because i don't like to think parents let their kids read and post on the internet at that age (but i know that they do).

he posted this once: "I was even going to get CivChronicles for Christmas, but in the end, I decided against it and got CivCity: Rome (which was a GREAT game until I ran into some bugs) and Sid Meier's Railroads (which I am TRYING to get myself to play more of). My parents even took the family on a vacation near the Great Smokey Mountains in North Carolina and didn't allow me to take Civilization 4: Warlords with me so that I could try to get into those games."

yes i may be old-school, but my brothers and i were brought up "you've been playing/reading inside too long, go play outside" not "you've been playing that game too long, go play this other game"??? /sigh.

The key is how meaningful to that SG are the comments. Getting "in my game I got 4 religions" is SPAM. Answering questions on game features is always OK.

If I caught right SF-Bot may be talking about the RB29 results across teams, and that goes AGAINST the team's wishes. The cross the lines and is clearly bad protocol.

I agree that when the lurker is posting more often then the players, and posting trivial nonsense it crosses the line. Try to keep the posts about that SG with rare exceptions - I have cross posted when I notice a player missed one of the games he is up in the games I am running.

If you know the team members, there is more leeway. In RBW3 when the comment was made about a premature war, I joked there are Mehmed the unwise and it was taken as the joke it was meant to be.

20 posts about you need a military pump earns a STFU.

That actually was not SF,that was me, and I apologize. I assumed (erroneously) that info that did not aid the team I posted to was not considered spoiler info. I apologize, I have learned my lesson, and I will not do it again.

This is a great thread. Previously I was unclear on what people expected of me as far as SG etiquette, and I didn't know when I was crossing the line. Now I understand much better. Thanks!

props where they're due. you'd started asking this in that longer thread but it went on to other things. i really really really like reading SG threads, and i'd really really hate to be part of anything that made the people posting them not want to post them any longer. so i decided to go ahead and stick this out there specifically, inspired partly by you smile

You should get involved in SGs then, as participation is much more enjoyable than lurking the threads wink . It will improve your Civ playing more than you'd think as well.

ah, but improving my own playing of civ at the expense of hindering the team's performance is a no-no! if you're ozbenno from HoF you're familiar with my permanoobness already. if you're not, well, just know that i'm pretty much permanoob. *giggle*

and besides, the best ones to read are the ones already finished. then i don't have to wait ... and wait ... and wait ... for them to actually take the turns and finish!

Well I am only 14, and I have also been posting in the SG threads, I just hope that I am not being too irritating. Although I think that it is probably better to just sit back and let the players play. I know I would be irritated if someone started spamming my SG thread.

oops i apologize and certainly don't mean that all teenagers are represented by SF. it's not all about chronological age. i know some guys that are 30 that act 12 trust me! i hope my comments about one particular 12-year-old didn't offend you. in fact i've enjoyed lurking an SG i think you're in (emperor domination if my memory's right). i'd not have guessed your age and i don't think it puts you in the same category as him, it's behavior that does it.

but, speaking as someone old enough to be your mother ... please do stay away from the porn sites at your age! *giggle*

Maturity is not directly reflected by age. If anyone here guessed my age, I'd bet it would be a lot older than what I actually am.

I am not an SG veteran, but I agree with the rough guidelines that others mentioned previously. The only lurker that I have encountered that has been over the top was SF. That means that I have completely nothing against Clovis, Galileo, KMad and the rest. The method that you have taken to lurk is completely fine, in my opinion. Clovis just had a very minor slipup, and it was no big deal.
