Yes, that probably should have been in the rules for the game, but I thought it was self-evident that you couldn't TRADE for elephants or pigs or whatnot. Good clarification. (Hopefully no one has already violated this rule by accident...)

game over, now have to write up my report with screenies.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Hrm, so to confirm, as this is confusing to me in a pacifist variant: If you peacefully gain control of an animal tile via culture, that doesn't score because you cannot pillage the road. But if you declare war (lose 2 points), pillage the road+pasture and remove the AI city, then that counts for scoring. Is that correct?

Aha, I found the answer to my own question by reading the info properly rolleye

I have a question. On one side we permitted to defend ourself. On other side I want to play no war declaration game.
So, does automatic war declaration from mutial defence pact count as a war declaration?

It depends on who does the declaring. If the printout on the left side of the screen reads "You have declared war on ____", then that counts as a war declaration for -2 points, even if it was triggered by an alliance/defensive pact. If the printout reads "____ has declared war on us", then you're in the clear.

If your ally in a defensive pact declares war on someone, I don't think that drags you in with it. The pact is just dissolved.

But if your ally gets declared war by someone else, then you automagically declare war on the attacker, as said.

Again, I repeat: watch the printout display on the left side of the screen. If it reads "You have declared war on ____", then you take a 2 point penalty. The context doesn't matter; if the war declaration results from a defensive pact, that's just a tough break. (If you're worried about this, don't sign defensive pacts.)

The alternative would open up room for some gamey exploits, signing defensive pacts and then trying to coerce the AI into declaring war on your partner. The rule as written is simple and easy to understand; I think it's preferable to opening up a potential can of worms with special cases for various different situations. If for any reason the screen prints out "You have declared war on ____", then apply the 2 point penalty.
