Actually there is, its called Snow(Ice).

This is why you cannot use both Snowfall and Fire elementals in the same attack unless you use the elementals first wink

Assuming "no hell terrain" and "Hyborem" can even work in the same sentence lol

Out of curiosity, how was Hyborem going to break the map? Had he spawned in the ice without any mobs to fight him, surely the lack of any production or commerce tiles to work would have been nerf enough? I mean, yeah he can run an economy on specialists alone, but that really only happens in SP games where you can peacefully tech a bunch of expensive civics and the AI feeds you tons of manes...

There was tons of metals in the ice - gems, iron, marble, gunpowder. More than enough to massively outproduce everyone else after Smelting ( which is not that much of an ask ). Also, all that land would be essentialy uncontested expansion space with noone being able to make effective use of the Ice.

Why not just have it be empty Ice/ Desert?

To make it actually worth fighting over later on.

Otherwise it might as well be empty ocean, but that's hardly more than a boring wheel map.

Anyone know what happened with Hyborem? How was he killed? Shouldn't he have been at peace with the Barbs?

The HN barbs killed all of Hyborems units ... we were actually farming newly created manes with our spider :D

As for the Gela, not sure what happend to it ... we had a plan to kill Hyborem with a scout.
