Changing the way RB does GvG

As I already told you before it sounds like a good idea to me. I was about to make a post about it to yesterday, right after we threw up the idea to see if it might be any good.

Personally we should first check which people are able to be on around 7 and are interested in GvG. It will most likely be a bit easier to find guests around that time, the europeans will probably still be awake, but we shouldn't rely on just 4 ppl to be there as natives. Because if that happens i can assure you that 1 day we have the guests but not the natives :D

One thing about casual GvG: it has to be casual. I can understand asking people to make minor changes to their builds, but if someone shows up and wants to run an Avatar of Dwayna derv, asking them to ditch Dwayna and run Melandru or something else entirely isn't right. Last week when I showed up people were in the hall and you guys were running a specific build and asking people to completely change their chars to fit into it... well, I don't know how that could be considered casual. Maybe Friday should be limited to scrims and unrateds if running regular matches is going to cause the competativeness to make it less fun?

Yuck. I have to say that I have no interest in just doing scrimmages and unrated matches. The only reason, IMHO, to do GvG is to do GvG, dammit! I doubt I'd continue joining in on Friday if that's all we were going to do.
I don't get online enough to be privy to all of the discussion that goes on in-game, but has there really been that much complaining by people about trying to fit into a specific build? I missed last Friday's outing; was it a major problem? Is there any way that we can rescue the current trajectory of Friday night GvG being relegated to "lame non-competitive n00b" status, and Real GvG being reserved only for those Elite Few who can spend literally hours and hours playing GW? I've very much enjoyed getting into GvG, and I'm rather upset that I'm finding myself shunted into non-competetive status. [Image: frown.gif]

I had a long post but I realized it was getting silly. As far as I can tell, it boils down to Wyrm's acceptance that we can't reach the kind of level he'd hoped for playing once a week, and that he wants to run some strange things for variety and fun. All of the other weekly RB GvGers expect the leader to give them a build including roles they are familiar with, even if they aren't expecting a good ladder rating to result. There are other reasonable benefits for running a more "bring whatever" approach like getting more guildies playing, but not enough RB seem convinced of them at this time.

As a compromise (for now) I suggest the leader having some idea of a team build for the players that want one, but allowing individuals to make alterations or substitutions that fulfill similar roles if they like. This week Jude and Arctic want to try hexes since people at our level seem to have forgotten about them, so I've made up some templates for that. When one of them leaves we can try something different team-wise if people actually have ideas for what they want to play, or else we'll continue with that default.

P.S. no "competitive team" has actually formed yet. But I kindof want to start a team that aims for winning reward points from some daily tournies with the upcoming changes that allow guesting. That isn't the same as a good ladder rating or vying with top guilds, but it's a bit more involved than what we are doing at present. Whether or not that gets off the ground shouldn't change whatever people want to do on fridays.

I had already accepted that a while back, but I guess the rather brief run we had with a rating of 1000+ sparked some competativeness and, before long, we were trying to be a top guild with players that do PvP once a week. So here's what basically happened in my opinion:

Competative people got upset with non-competative people and things got out of hand. Issues that should have been handled quietly were blown out of proportion and, as a result, massive arguments have been waged and friendships destroyed with people like me getting stuck in the middle. As a result I'm pretty much burned out and no longer look forward to showing up Friday evening. It is painfully obvious to me that some people should not be playing together and we've been having them play together to fill the GvG roster, which is a mistake.

That's it in a nutshell.

We need 8 competative players from the guild to do that. Right now we have... 2? Maybe 3?

Yeah, I didn't see that before. But I think I "got" it last night, and we had quite a bit of fun despite the heavy losses. Whether you're casual or not ultimately doesn't have that much to do with whether you're running a build. Maybe we can even try Ride the Lightning next time. [Image: tongue.gif]

It still would be nice to hit more appropriate guilds though... I am sure there are still casual opponents out there, and will try to research some better times.

Guru had a topic once for guilds looking for casual matches to do unrateds against. No idea what happened to it though.

If we want matches around our level we should play during the EU times since GW is pretty much dead in the US as far as PvP goes.

Just saw a build that got me thinking. Since so many of our fights wind up starting around the teleporter exit and seem to stay in other close-quarters areas, we should run a mes with Fevered Dreams and an Assassin w/Black Spider + Twisting Fangs. Could throw a Virulence necro in there just for good measure.

Anyways, enough of my random ideas.
