How to make yourself a target in the early game:

Step 1:

be #1 in every category.

Step #2:

Build the first wonder while the others are building settlers

Step #3: Have your wounded archer chased into a place where there is a lion nearby, because your opponent wants to mine copper. Have your warrior get eaten by a bear (fortunately, I can get away from da bear), thus dropping your soldier count precipitously.

I am #1 in all the categories, mainly because my cap is growing and not building a settler/other worker. TT will get a good production boost from the copper in a few turns - I may go back to that hill, since I'm sure that TT is just covering his worker with his archer.

Hunting in 1 turn, then AH->archery->Wheel->pottery. Or maybe AH->wheel->archery->pottery. or AH->wheel->pottery->archery.

Gotta know where horses are to plan...

Stonehenge in 14. Will be less after the forest chop/mine.

ok - more screenies later. TT has been chasing my archer to cover his worker with his archer.

There is a lion around, so I'm trying to avoid him. The safest place, right now, is actually on TT's fur tile (which I don't much like doing, cause I think he was working it - it's costing him a commerce, but still...)

Anyway - I have a decision to make. His cap is open. I think he's building a warrior in it, which implies that his other archer isn't near enough to cover.

I could use some philosophical help here - it is always war, but it sucks to spend time on a game, just to lose it like this. If he can build a warrior, I can't take the city - my archer is wounded, and it's on a hill behind a river, so something like a 95% bonus - 2 on 4 is bad odds.

I mean - there is a practical issue - if his archer is around and I move my archer onto flat ground, he'll kill it - so I don't know if it's a good move to even threaten.

But, philosophically - is it a jerk move to kill the city in a game like this? I mean - if he can't cover it.

ok, no screenies from last turn.

TT moved his other archer in. The lion showed up in a place where I could safely move towards my land.

I have seen 2 bears hanging around my land. I want to find Serdoa, but the warrior is too risky - bears will eat him and the soon-to-come warriors/archers won't help, either.

kept moving units back. TT isn't building a settler - he grew to size 3.

I don't think it matters, though - I'll get stonehenge, I'm pretty sure.

more moving units around. Still chopping, still growing, still building stonehenge.

TT has 22 hammers into something that isn't a worker/settler, since he's growing - unless he's switching back and forth.

It could be a holkan - it can't be an axe, cause he doens't have copper hooked up yet.

Unless it's a settler, it's probably stonehenge or a granary and I don't think he has pottery yet. I am ahead of him on stonehenge, I think, especially since I'm chopping - but then, copper is a very strong tile.

Even if it's stonehenge, he's 2 turns behind me (I have 36 hammers in).

I have to start thinking about post-henge. I was going to go settler, but I think a worker is called for - I have multiple 3 fat cross tiles that need improving, will get gold soon and need roads. I'm thinking 2 pop whip a worker and then a warrior and then an archer - 5 mil units should be enough to hold off the ravening hordes of barbs.

On Barbs:

According to this post, barbs can start replacing animals as soon as 2 more cities are founded (after turn 13, when there are at least 1.5 cities per player).

So we are probably safe from the ravening hordes for a little while.

that makes a military city on that side of the city make more sense.

I'm currently thinking either black or purple - the decision will depend on what is on the other side of the pigs, I think.

I had been moving an archer south for exploration, but I have think about moving him north now. of course, north IS south on a toroidal map, at least eventually....

I grew to size 5 - the warrior will go in to make the city happy.

3 turns till henge.

Current plan is build another worker, perhaps with a 2 pop slave at some point. I am not sure what to do with my first worker - I think the right thing is to chop a forest, then build road pieces to the cow and pasture the cow, while the first worker camps the fur, then mines the copper while growing back to a 2 pop whip/chop fueld settler.

But I'm not sure.

TT has 36 hammers into something - he's growing, so I think he's building henge. But he's going slower than me, so he won't get it.

zero has 20 hammers on something.

Serdoa is still size 2 - I think he's building a settler.

TT is still building. I'm 2 turns from stonehenge, going to chop another forest for a 2nd worker. Current tech path is wheel->pottery. Don't need archery yet and would like to get a granary before much whipping...

Zero has a scout in the area who could mess me up some by walking on improved tiles. Hopefully, he'll stay away.

My south exploring archer is showing not much interesting next to the pigs, which I assume is mirrored to my NE...

ok, so, on quick, a mace is 46 hammers. The black dot can make 46/turn with HE at size 9, or 47 at size 8 with HE and a forge, which is 1 turn maces.

So, right now, that's my target site.

At size 11 (working all specials and hills, plus riverside cottages, the cap will get 16 - 28 with bureau bonus. Which is enough for 4 cats per 5 turns or so.

Well, Zero did try to mess with my tiles by moving the scout in. I moved my warrior onto the wheat and the archer into the city. I'll kill the scout next turn if he stays.

Fortunately, it doesn't affect anything - i still get stonehenge smile

The worker starts chopping and I'll go to another worker next turn.

I'm not sure whether I go archery or pottery next - I think archery, since I'm a ways from improving the copper (moved my worker to the wrong forest last turn) and so a ways from spears, and people will be able to build chariots soon, which chew dogs up. But they don't do well vs. Guerilla archers on hills - and an archer/dog combo can kill one for less than the other guy spends.

Huh - I hadn't noticed something yesterday, which was that my archer got hit by a wolf...

Also, I took a look at soldier counts from last turn and everyone is at 25K (except me, at 24K) I'll have to do some analysis to figure out who has what - I get 1K more from more pop, so I assume that for some, it's the wheel vs AH or something. It's hard to believe that anyone has researched more than I have, since I've been working a 3 commerce tile from turn 6 or so and no one has access to a 3 commerce tile yet (though I think TT may have camped the fur by now)

I'll do some C&D over time later - I haven't been keeping up on it.
