Stacking Gold Find in Diablo 3

Hi everyone! The last week I have been playing Diablo 3 quite intensively. At the moment I am level 60 and progressing through Act I Inferno with relative ease. My character is a Witch Doctor. As I was approaching level 60 and the later Acts of Hell I asked myself how I could ensure that I got the best gear possible so as to ensure speedy progress. I would like to share my conclusions with you all.

My initial plan for Diablo 3 was to do the same thing that I did in Diablo 2: namely get gear with high stats and Magic Find. But two things have, in my opinion, altered the game in a significant way: The AH and the Nephalem Valor buff.

To take the AH first: The amount of items on the AH is staggering, and the prices are really not that high. With some cash in your pocket, you can get really good items that would otherwise take you days, or even weeks, of farming to find. This means that it is your bank account that determines how good gear you get (until you reach the later Acts of Inferno yourself.) But what is the best way to make enough money to buy late game items on the AH? One option would be to stack MF to find good items and selling them on the AH, but I'm not so sure that is the most efficient way to play. Instead I have been doing something different: I've started stacking Gold Find.

Now, with the Nephalem Valor buff and +Gold Find equipment I can easily reach +150% Gold Find. If I sacrifice some stats, 200+ should also be possible. The result is that a Hell Asmodeus run (all the way from Arreat Crater level 1), which takes a bit more than 1 hour for me, gives me 100,000 gold. This includes the 50 blue and 15 yellow items that I get on average, and sell to the vendor. In Act 1 Inferno it is not uncommon for regular mobs to drop over 1,000 gold, so I expect that I will make even more gold per hour there.

After seeing these numbers I am starting to be convinced that stacking Gold Find is the superior way to play from level 60 and to the very final Acts of Inferno (if your goal is to get the best gear and progress at a quick pace.) I do keep some Magic Find gear in my backpack as well, and switch to it just before finishing off a boss, but 99% of the time I am wearing Gold Find. Has anyone experimented with similar builds?

You know, after using the blacksmith quite a bit and also seeing the sheer volume of gear on the AH at present, I was starting to consider something down these lines. I haven't had time to even get through Hell difficulty, though, so I hadn't fleshed out the idea. It may be that this is a unique time to take this route, and as the number of players dwindles and farmers take over Magic Find will become superior.

I think it's definitely a viable strategy to focus on Gold (and rares with gold find are probably cheaper), but Magic Find is more fun for me.

I believe it's probably the best strategy at this point in time since gold is relatively valuable right now. In a few months, once everbody has paid off most gold sinks and inflation starts to kick in it may be a different story.

It seems an excellent strat; even with my play of leveling the blacksmith i'm prioritizing gold find over magic find. Still can't bring myself to use the AH yet- just like i had a hard time trading for items in D2. If it didnt drop from my group then i just don't get the same satisfaction out of acquiring it

I get that same feeling after making my first auction purchase..., the AH as a substitute for playing the game.

That said, my barb finally has more than no damage....

I feel just the opposite, I have fun looking through pages of items trying to grab a bargain and having my character as maximized as possible at any point in time.
To me, the are just to many random crap items with wasted stats in the game to rely on drops only. I would agree if it was like WoW where after a quest you could pick an item where at least the stats are fitting for your class.

But I guess everybody is different in that regard and the good thing is that you can play without the AH if you wish.

I find the AH to be the way to go if you want elite gear on the cheap. For tiny sums of gold, I've been able to buy-out gear that is twice as good for my level as any of the magic/rare drops I've received from the game. I like bargain shopping on the AH, but it definitely does reduce some of the joy of loot drops from a game where loot has more or less been the point.

I bought some magic find gear on the AH, so I get to have it both ways lol

Warning: I bought a Goldwrap unique belt which gives both gold and magic find, but it's currently broken as far as I can tell, and doesn't give its stated attack speed boost. I recommend NOT investing in this item until such time as it's fixed.

The AH makes the market a lot more efficient, which means a lot of usable but not top-tier items that would otherwise be vendored or sit around collecting dust in players' stashes are on sale for cheap.

Yeah lots to get on the AH. You can grab some pretty top notch rare weapons for levelling chars for <1000g. I've decided I'll never buy a legendary or set item from it though as finding those is part of the game to me. Nor will I use the AH to max out my top level characters. I just think it would take away too much from the diablo game for me if I did so and turn it into just a leveling game and gold grinding rather than a loot jackpot smile
