Just got finished act 1 with my first wizard, a melee one at that , and went pretty well. Wondering what others are thinking of the class?
My current build:
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wi...abc!aaaa.a
I keep wishing there were 7 slots for skills so I could fit in magic weapon AND familiar but no such luck. Maybe I'll get tired of explosive blast but as of right now it's my only real arcane power dump so to speak. It's also one of the few offensive abilities that stays true to melee I'd say though others may disagree. Not sure what else would qualify.
Time to go see if I can keep alive in nightmare now

I would take wormhole not the defensive rune on teleport. You can do 4 blinks with no lag, 3 in the sewer and other low-fps laggy areas. Triple-quadra blink is really, really strong. If you are melee wizard, spectral blade and explosive blast are good I suppose. I would run slow time(time warp) instead of familiar due to better melee fighting then just a flat damage increase.
I'm in A2 Nightmare on my first time on D3 on a Wizard. Hydra, Teleport, Diamond Skin are really core to my character so far. I'm undecided if I should run Arcane Orb or Ray of Frost. For the basic signature spell, I use Magic Missile but I haven't really experimented with the other ones yet tbh.

Not high enough level yet for wormhole or I would
Problem with slow time is it can only be up a little less than 50% of the time and means you're stuck in one area. Kiting mobs so as not to be surrounded is pretty important, especially champion mobs later on and thus I'd say it would be very difficult to get the full benefit from it. Familiar adds a constant 12% damage to my attacks plus whatever damage it does and it follows wherever I go so is never lost.
Maybe I'll give it a shot though while I'm not in high difficulty yet just to see how it goes but I suspect it's not going to be worth a switch.

If I know I'm killing stuff that'll line up really nicely (think beta part of Act 1, or the 1st half of act 3) I really like disintegrate and electrocute. If I'm in wide open areas (ie act 2) arcane orb with seeker magic missile (or lightning blast runed electrocute so it goes on forever) is my favorite, especially for boss battles.
I agree at wishing there was a 7th slot, but I think that's a good thing. Makes you make hard choices, which is good.
Also for teleport- I'm wavering between wormhole and fracture. Fracture is really good on your own, as it gives you the time to slow and run away. Enough mobs usually attack the wrong target to make things non-lethal for awhile unless I get careless.

I thought wormhole was level 31, which is exactly the level of your wizard. I am probably totally wrong about slow time, I've only seen it used.

If you are going melee, grab Archon! The melee attack does a ton of damage.

Congrats on getting through normal difficulty! I have a similar up-close-and-personal-ranged-toon, but she's a demon hunter, relying on explosives instead of magical attacks. Plus she's not hardcore; I'm expecting to convert her to a regular ranged character once it becomes too difficult to progress using melee and thrown weapons. That and she's only in A2 normal.

Lvl 37 Sorcie here. Although relying on distance attacks due to the whole AMD draw lag thingie. Softcore for the very same reason.
That being said, lately I'm only dying because of trying wacky stuff as seeing how do I fare against that superfast superstrong champ or how fast would that chains spell draw my HP orb... you get the idea I guess.
If they sort it with Catalist 12.5 I'm well willing to get into Hardcore play and start working on some wacky builds.

Alia just finished Hell last night. Solo'd all the way with the Enchantress. Of course there were fooling around with all the skills at least to get a taste of what they're about, but mostly stayed with Forst Nova, Plauge Hydra, Ice Armor, Archon, Fireball ( I meant Arcane Orb) and Disintegrate - similar to the bar shown below. Force Armor was switched in only since hell Raka, to deal with being one hit killed; and Bliz from hell Izzy to slow down his summons. The bar below turned out to be very energy efficient and I seldom hear I need more mana since. I would probably switch Disintegrate/Volatility back in since I like it more. It does awesome damage when used against mobs with dying monsters just like a chained CE in D2
I've noticed, if I tried to put a distance between Raka right from the beginning, I will get charged and possibly killed right away. Since he can tele charge you anyways, might as well stay and fight like a girl. I suspect, having him off to the side of or off the screen might be the trigger for the charge. Think I wiil test that after the post.
I must say D3 is a great game thus far except for those crazy faster than you can blink one hit killer mobs. Such stupid stuff had me on the verge of quitting the game until it gets balanced. It robbed me of a sense of accomplishment for having beaten hell, since it forced upon me countless senseless deaths. All the while, I was thinking I'd put up this BS and quit after I finish hell diff.
I was thinking what more stupid cheese can bliz pull, Town Kill? And then as soon as Alia entered Inferno...
