If you spot it on sale and are interested in giving it a shot at some future point then sure, go for it. Exactly when some future point will arrive is of course your decision, but I expect SotS2 to follow the same path SotS1 did regarding being not-so-great at launch and eventually evolving to become a classic over the course of several expansions. This is very clearly what Kerberos is planning; they are committed to the SotS series for the long run. Of course you could as easily wait for a future sale at a point when the game is in better shape to pull the trigger on the purchase as well, and that would be perfectly reasonable as well.

I keep seeing patch notes about major game crashing bugs being fixed. So... I'd say no.

It's already playable, from what I've read recently -- from what I've seen the crashes you see being fixed are either (a) a hotfix after a large feature patch which broke something, or (b) occurring in uncommon circumstances and can easily be worked around.

That said, we are not yet at all-clear status, which is what I personally am waiting for.

SotS 2 is on sale on Steam this weekend, -50%, could be even lower on one of the days. Maybe it's time to get it...

Rumor has it that the long-delayed "all-clear" post should be coming relatively soon. I wouldn't bring it up (as I've heard that one before) but SotS2 is on sale for bargain basement prices at the moment; $7.45 on GamersGate.

Remember to read system requirements before buying - I didn't and am now stuck with a game I can't play SotS2 requires Win7 - I know I'm a dinosaur, but I'm still running XP. Recommended hardware also includes 6GB of RAM and at least 1650x1080 monitor resolution

The (potential) notification is appreciated, Zed-F. SotS II has been sitting unlaunched for quite a long time now, but at some point it would be nice to actually give it a shot -- if it would be worth the time.

yuris125, that is interesting. I had not realized the recommended specs were that high. My machine meets them, but only barely.

It doesn't require Win7, but it does require a 64-bit OS. I am running Vista and I can launch it no problem. I believe the game will run with 4GB of RAM, though I wouldn't vouch for performance under those circumstances; personally I have 8GB. Also you don't need a high resolution monitor -- I am running 1440x900 and I know the game plays fine on that.

As far as the state of the game, I admit I am not paying super-close attention because I continue to wait for the all-clear. However as I understand it, nearly all the content planned for release 1 is now in and functional, and the game has gotten to be pretty complex and involving -- much moreso than SotS1 was upon release. Mainly what's left is a couple bug/AI/performance passes before they announce all-clear and start looking toward future quality-of-life updates and, eventually, expansion packs. There are quite a few people on the official forums playing and having fun with the game.

I think that working for effectively free on the game for nearly a year before even starting to think about working on stuff they will charge for was a classy move on their part. That level of product support is what Kerberos is known for.
