Highest level you can beat a single player AW game?

I've been having a bit of fun with AW games on Pangaea, as that feels like slightly more honest MP practice. I'm rigging the game a bit as I play with a good leader and give the AI mostly crap ones I also improve my start so it has 2 food resources and PH. At Monarch I can fairly easily snowball the enemy before they get serious about trying to smash me against the wall, Emperor is proving difficult. Anyone else having fun with a similar setup? I typically go with Huge and 11 players, flat wrap.

if playing as Mali (doubtless the strongest civ when playing AW because Skirmishers is so bloody strong), i'm usually able to survive till ~~1000ad on Emperor before things start looking dicey, without otherwise cooking the map

Game difficulty is also map-dependent. On Huge, sure, you get more time to build up on Huge, but there's also a lot more players you have to deal with. If you don't kill some AIs early, you're going to need 20:1 or 30:1 kill ratios to win with 11 opponents, and that's difficult without a tech edge. Emperor + Standard is likely easier in some ways than Monarch/Huge.

I'm sure this is a fun setup, but it's nothing like MP.

Oh I know, just comparing with other SP setups. Can you think of one that would fit better?

That would be a fun Adventure. You don't know anything about the scenario and you get to choose your own difficulty.
