In case this does not work out try to switch over to DirectDraw mode with the Video Test tools. I didn't notice any lose of detail doing this other than a small colorshift.
D2/LoD has Direct3D v6.1 implemented which is long ago on a PC-timescale. For me even with a GF7 card Direct3D mode gets choppy at times and i know by the use of more up-to-date games it's not in the responsability of card or driver. In DirectDraw mode its smooth going at a stable framerate even with a ton of critters or effects on screen.
