zakalwe Wrote:In the FFH game, "names are not indicative of alignment" was the spiel, and lots of people claimed their names early, disregarding the fact that names could correlate with abilities. In that game, I had a strong protective role, and my name very much gave that away. Yet people kept pushing for me to claim, and I ended up having to do just that.
I think Selrahc sort of already touched on some of this, but here's my own take-
In the FFH game,
some names
did indicate that the player was a Wolf- the Wolves of that game were the Ashen Veil (Satanic religion of evil), so FFH characters like Hyborem (literally a giant red demon), were obviously evil. But Hyborem and a couple other wolves had alternate identities they could claim. There was also one wolf whose name didn't give away anything. I forget if we had a name-seer that game, and I'm not sure I have the patience to read back through the thread.
Anyway, the point is that there were a few names which
did help the village, once they were known, although again whether we even had a means to figure out people's real names now escapes me. There aren't any human faction leaders in SMAC I can think of whose names would inherently indicate "wolf". However, I would not be at all surprised if we had a third faction this game, what with the set-up language and the conspicuous mention of alien factions in Bigger's first paragraph, who then aren't mentioned as attending the Council in the second (implying to me that they are around, but lurking out of sight). If there
are aliens, I assume they are disguised, because in their cases knowing their alien faction leader names would give away everything.
Regardless, we shouldn't get carried away or distracted with this- we
know there are wolves, and killing them is the priority over a third (or fourth) faction which may or may not exist. Name claiming shouldn't be mandatory, if there's a serious risk of abilities and names being tied together, but if would be useful if we have a name seer and/or think there is a possibility of finding contradictions in name claims. Also, are there any Faction Leaders in SMAC whose names would immediately lead one to correctly guess what abilities they had in a WW game? I think the FFH game was a special case- most of our abilities were named after our respective Civ's Worldspells, some of which had effects which pretty blatantly translated to specific WW roles (for instance, in FFH the Elohim WS protects you from invasion for several turns, so a WW player who claims an Elohim character could easily and probably accurately be interpreted as having some sort of baner-esque power).
So, my personal feeling is that name-claiming is probably more likely to help the village than hurt it, but I'm not going to push too strongly for it. But I wanted to give my reasoning, and context from the FFH game (the only other Civ Mod-themed WW game).

Its a little early to say who's a lurker and who isnt though.
Ah, please don't get carried away with going after people who don't post constantly. I already stated this in the set-up thread, but I'm going to be away between August 16-20 or so; I'll have internet access and will be able to occasionally check in and at least read the thread and vote, but there's a good chance I won't be able to contribute regularly.
Besides, we've had plenty of games with talkative wolves.

I did say in the set-up thread I'd RP "until I got bored" :neenernee
I'll probably do some more later, but it's both exhausting and not particularly fun to RP for every post when nobody else is getting in on the act. Plus it would be more difficult to contribute positively for the village if I'm having to write everything as "Captain Sven: Sullen Pirate Dude".
I'll change my vote to
Sareln. Reasons: based on the repeated arguments from like half the players in this game, I am inclined to agree that lynching novice just because he's a strong player doesn't make sense. And Sareln's reasoning for voting for Pin strikes me as being the work of a "try-hard" wolf (which I should know about, having been one in WW 1 :neenernee)
