Duel R - pindicator does it gangnam style

Goddam song is stuck in my head. Thank you roommate, for playing it over and over and over and over as you practice your phonetic karaoke. I don't care that you got a great ovation or who you picked up at the bar, to quote Carl from ATHF: "I only heard your little song about a thousand times. Now I need candy, and I don't know why"

So since it is stuck in my head, I'm gonna fill my spoiler images with stuff from the many memes it has spawned.

I hope that got it out of my system...

What was I doing here? Oh yes, dueling with Rego!

He's been hinting at the idea since I "stole" that victory from him in pbem26 and today must have been a particularly slow day at work -- I know it was a slow day for the pitboss game we're in together -- because I had this in chat from him:

Quote:Rego: would you be interested in a duel?
(civ4, not RL)
Me: the gauntlet is thrown!
Rego: i demand satisfaction!
Me: my honor demands i accept
that and i've never done one

So I'm sure he's laid out the rules in his thread, but we agreed on pretty much the following:

Quote:RB Mod 2.01
Pick the opponent's leaders
* I gave Pindicator
* He gave me
Mirrorland script
* Duel size
* Temperate, Low Sealevel
* Ancient start
* Default Waterways
* Quick speed
* Critical Resources Close
No huts, events, barbs, or espionage (supposedly that works in RB Mod lol)
Always War / CTON
"Casual" game
* No C&D allowed
* Try to spend a minimal amount of time on the save / game
* Basic strategizing okay (lining up 1-turn techs to snag Liberalism, etc)

Not sure what "basic strategizing" is vs. "advanced strategizing", but I'm going to take it as a sign not to dust off my spreadsheets.

Again, to quote Carl from ATHF:

"You know what, at this point, it doesn't matter. 'Cause it keeps running inside my head and it won't leave unless I blow it out with a bullet"

Okay, a little melodramatic that, but it has literally been on repeat in my head for 3 days.

The music video is hilarious, though. Go look it up. Or better yet, I'll link it.

And watch it again.

Anyway, the things I'm looking forward to in this game:
  • Playing around more with RB Mod
  • The whole picking each other's leader / civ thing
  • Releasing stress built up from "WTF are you thinking!?" moments in PB5
  • Kicking Rego's ass and ending this "I would have won pbem26" nonsense

As for picking leaders, I had a pretty hard time deciding what I wanted to give him. There's no obvious Pro/Imp pick like you get in BtS - although I did end up giving Rego IMP, but that was because it seemed like a lesser of evils. As for the other trait I gave him CHM, although I may regret that.

So Rego got Cyrus for a leader. He spilled the beans that this would not be a water heavy map; that made the civ easy - Portugal. I was thinking about Spain because Fishing / Mysticism is easily the worst trait pair to start with, but I didn't want to deal with Conquistadors later on the road.

He gave me Charlemagne of England - so we weren't all that far off on what we were thinking. Both of us get Fishing / Mining starts. I have PRO and he has CHM and we both have IMP. So things should be pretty even.

Okay - first 3 turns:

[Image: DuelR-turn003-stuff.jpg]

The settler started 1 tile south of where I planted my city. I considered planting on top of the bananas, but when I moved the warrior north instead I figured keeping the pigs was better.

Hunting is to get the pigs hooked up (remember, that's a change in RB Mod - hunting unlocks pastures for workers); and the worker is to get foodstuffs going.

After Hunting my tentative plan is Bronze Working -> Wheel -> Pottery. If Rego is going to give me cheap Granaries then I'm going to take advantage of them. And if the map is going to give lots of river tiles in the capital then I need to cottage them up. Then I'll probably go Archery and take advantage of the free CG promotion; we'll see. Zero-sum warfare means units are going to be more important than usual.

Just like the saying goes: misery loves company.

Rego & I played through turn 11 tonight. First off, I scouted in the wrong direction:

[Image: DuelR-turn011-exploring.jpg]

That's a ton more water than I thought we were going to have. Maybe Portugal will see some use for him after all - Feitorias will be very useful for Rego at least. Well, I did find what looks like a perfect Moai site between the whales and the crabs. Maybe less than perfect: in order to get to it I need to build a boat, and the crabs and whales are the only food I've managed to stumble across so far.

My tech path went Hunting -> Agriculture -> Bronze Working. Not sure if BW was the right call, what with the nerf to Slavery and this not being a high food start. But I will get to know where the copper is and that is probably worth it. And chops. I'm still thinking tech path is going to be Wheel -> Potter next. Maybe Archery or AH after that, maybe Writing.

Build order is going to be warrior -> warrior -> settler. Maybe just 1 warrior, but then I need to contend with a scouting warrior while defending 2 bases with 1 warrior of my own. Then again, early risks begat later rewards (or early death).

I also just realized this is a toroid. So does the script put is as far apart as two people can be on a toroid or does it put us as far apart as two people can be on a cylander and just have toroid wrap? Cause that would infer two different directions I should scout with my warrior.

Org would be an awesome trait on this map. Actually, I'm starting to think Org is the best trait in RB Mod. Already it was solid, and now it has double production to libraries. Next RBMod game I play I'm going to take Asoka (ORG/SPI) and live large.

Edit: Nevermind, I misread.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.
