Thanks Ruff, found that list too... It was just a thought, forgot about masonry. Bulbing civil service won't work...

I don't even like the idea of Oracle. We've played our high risk opening, we should stand and simply seek to stay ahead of the pack. No more diverting hammers from Not Dying into another early wonder.

I kind of agree. Oracle's tech would be nice, but the main reason to build it would be for denial purposes. Since we're already investing in Henge, I'd much rather just use it as a hammer dump to pick up some failgold later on. If no other teams seem to be going for the wonder, we can always revisit it later.

Not sure I agree. We do have diplo and war chariots (ssh, don't tell anyone we haven't found horses yet...) to deter early aggression. We're NAP'ed up with CFC and the only other contact we know of is WPC, who, pardon my superiority complex, we are not overly concerned about at this time. Further exploration could change my mind, for instance if we have the crazy Boudica team just across the jungle from us. But, for now, I think those would be hammers well spent.
FWIW, I also think Judaism would be good, partly for denial (why not if we can?) but mostly for the extra 10% science in our soon-to-be-teh-secks HR/Bureau steroid capital.
Edit: just occurred to me, having Judaism could actually be helpful to diplo. This gives us a commodity (one that is in limited supply) that we can negotiate with. Missionary trades/gifts are allowed, right? We could sell a missionary to a team in need of (our) religion or make it part of a diplo package to get us more favorable terms than we otherwise might.

Seeing as how ridiculously easy the Oracle would be to build (four forest chops at Focal Point + double-whip overflow = 80% of wonder cost), and the fact that we'll have Priesthood tech long before anyone else is even in the neighborhood (no one else has Polytheism or Meditation yet), I'm somewhat partial to slingshotting Metal Casting. If nothing else, it makes for good denial value, not to mention locking up yet another wonder (free Colossus + Financial = 4 commerce water tiles). The main downside that I can see would be placing a massive target on our back if we actually did Stonehenge + Oracle + multiple self-founded religions + Food/GNP leader. Maybe we could overcome that with diplomacy though - this is a full diplo games, and teams are always dumb about signing NAPs that tie up their hands until it's too late to do anything.
Anyway, let's play out the next four turns first and see if we get Stonehenge, then we can re-evaluate. That will determine at the very least whether we need an obelisk in Focal Point.

I agree with Sullla on waiting for the next 4 turns but I in favor of trying to build the oracle. Regarding us being a target, not only is diplo on, but also the map is quite big so mounting a successful invasion will be very hard until quite a bit later.

Yup. And mounting a profitable invasion that much harder still. We're going to be on the receiving end of a dogpile at some point, but let's grab as much of a lead as we can before that happens and make it PAINFUL, if not impossible. Oracle --> MC --> continued expansion/cottages/production/units.

The reason we are considering Oracle from my understanding is that we will hit Priesthood way before anyone else.
I've got news for everyone. If we are going to build every wonder when we beat the other team to techs, we are going to spend the whole game playing SimCiv. Because we are primed to blow everyone out of the water techwise.
I am not saying we shouldn't build Oracle (the extra GProphet points could be useful, I love Metal Casting, it is cheap), but if (when) we get 'Henge, we will be sitting on a massive advantage this game. It will be high time to start figuring out how we maintain that militarily.
I will be shocked if we don't hit gunpowder way before any other team. But until we get in the range of gunpowder, we will remain vulnerable to mass attacks. I agree with Luddite that catapults should be a real goal for defensive purposes, and the sooner we can get ourselves up to maces/knights, the sooner we can pretty much do whatever the hell we want.

Mass attacks are unlikely to happen imo with (1) full diplo, NAPs, and (2) large distances. I think that defensively we would be best served by cats and WCs (we should get horses at some point). However, guess what tech is on the way to maces/knights: MC

I wouldn't say we'll be first everywhere, or that we'd want to build everything that we could get to first, but MC/Large Statue in the Water will help us with expansion, and also gets us closer to knights (MC-->Machinery -->Guilds). I can see a bulb opportunity somewhere along the line to get to guilds "early" if we should need to do so (Merchant points from Colossus). I'm hoping that our military expansion phase can follow somewhere immediately after Liberalism -->Nationhood -->WPC under new management. But, this cart has gotten waaaaay out ahead of the horse for now. Counting down for the 'Henge in a few turns, then we'll see. But Oracle certainly would be useful, and is very achievable.
