Crowns: Strategy Boardgame (i.e. Chess + Stratego)

right, of course.

Perhaps coordinating pikemen/footmen could hold the center of the board. Haven't tried it yet, sounds fun.

I guess what I am saying is that once the Cav/Elephants get behind enemy lines (behind that wall of pikemen/footmen) its pretty much over for the opponents wink

(unless the've got some good backline defenses, I suppose)

EDIT: now that I think about it, a couple archers in the front 1 or 2 lines could really work to prevent a wall of pikemen/footmen from controlling the center of the map.

DBLEDIT: perhaps a lot of the game, like stratego, is to attempt to analyze what your opponent is likely to do (before the game begins). And then buy an army that will counter the majority of their likely choices.

of course, there are no 'hard counters' per se, but every little bit helps.

Yes, one on its own is weak, but like pawns in chess, pikemen or footmen working together are going to be able to ward off stronger units simply because your opponent will not want to capture your pikeman just to have his unit captured the next turn.

I would postulate that an Elephant behind enemy lines is just as strong as, or even more strong than a tower in front of the enemy lines.

Definitely. It's like a queen or a rook in chess on the 7th rank.
If you let your opponent get behind your ranks then you're in trouble smile

But I suppose that my postulation is that it can be extremely easy to get "behind ranks" due to all the space in the board.

(which is why perhaps some people will only set up in the first 2 rows I imagine??)
