PBEM 45 Vets Tech Thread

Sounds like a good banlist, Pindicator. What about PHI, though?

How about just banning the big five? CRE/FIN, CRE/EXP and EXP/FIN + India and Inca? I think those 5 are the only ones that everyone agrees about the power. Maybe ban all FIN leaders, if the map has a lot of water.

In a different subject, any opinions in quick or normal speed? Personally, I'd go for normal.

For reference, here's what PBEM43 is using (bolded the trait / leader part):

Quote:* Mapmaker will provide a starting screenshot, with all tiles forming the BFC of a city settled in place visible (manually revealed in worldbuilder if necessary, just for the screenshot).
* After deciding turn order, we'll choose a random starting player.
* Leaders/civs will be selected over two rounds of picking, from last player to first player.
* Some civs/traits will cost you turns if you pick them. For each lost turn, you must spend one turn at the start of the game doing absolutely nothing before you end turn. (You can't move or use units.)
* FIN, EXP, and India all cost 2 turns; CRE, Inca, Byzantium, and Rome cost 1 turn.
* Each player will start with a settler and scout on the starting tile (plus of course their civ's starting techs).
* If all players have turns to skip, we'll let those turn skips cancel, so that at least one player is playing an actual turn on t0.

I would lump ORG with CRE given our settings (lots of coastline, likely a toroid map) and swap Rome & Byzantium for Viking & Dutch.

Darius & Mehmed become the best leaders here. I think you have to consider ORG because we are likely going to have a toroid map with lots of coastline: a map ORG will shine in with reduced maintenance and cheap lighthouses.

I'm okay not banning the water-based civs if other people are against it. It'll be tempting not to pick Vikings again, but I'll try smile

Normal would be okay as long as we can keep turns moving at a good pace.

Should we ask the lurkers to decide the bans? I ask that because I'm not entirely sure about what the map will look like (if the map has a lot of water + toroidal, I agree about ORG) and it's difficult to make a choice without spoilered knowledge of the map.

We could also ban ORG/FIN, ORG/EXP and maybe ORG/CRE.

I'm confident that we can keep a nice pace with the turns and I think normal makes more strategies useful.

I like pindicator's idea, how about expanding on it a little:
a) Assign point values to traits (rough example, possibly inaccurate and depends heavily on the map)
3: FIN
2: EXP, CRE
1: SPI, IND, PHI, ORG
0: IMP, CHA, AGG, PRO

b) Assign point values to civs
3: Inca, India, Vikings, Dutch
2: Egypt, Ottomans, whatever else is usually picked
1: Rome, France, etc
0: Civs that are never used

c) Double reverse snake pick
d) Total points may not exceed 5

So if you picked a second tier civ and want FIN, you have to pick a 0-point trait to go with it.

etc

Point values should be set by the map maker + lurkers to account for map settings. Total point value may not exceed 8. So if you want Willem, you have to go with a 0-point Civilization. Similarly, if you want India you have 3 points to spend on traits which could be something sexy like IND/ORG. Double reverse snake pick as previously suggested.

Yeah, that's why my initial idea was to let mapmaker determine the bans. But if people are worried about a particular trait or civ or wonder then we can all agree on a ban regardless.

Perhaps Commodore can post a map thread and we round up some [strike]hapless lurkers[/strike] estimeed community members to come up with what they think should be banned?

I like pindicator's idea, would like to humbly suggest an expansion:

6 points: FIN
5 points: EXP
4 points: CRE, SPI
3 points: PHI, ORG, IND
2 points: CHA, IMP
1 point: AGG
0 points: PRO

Come up with similar rankings for civs, should be determined by mapmaker and lurkers. Double reverse snake pick as discussed. Point total for leader and civ may not exceed 9. For each unused point, maybe give the player some gold?

And after reviewing the flags - can my civ please have the viking flag.

So - Egyptian color, viking flag, specific leader with the traits that my selected leader has. First two can be done via edit of start game file. The last one would require a mod (you guys ok with playing with a super small mod just for my game story?
