This is the clincher for me. I just don't see a great use for another prophet. Too early for a golden age, no use for another shrine, nothing too appealing to bulb (best would probably be Theology for AP, but even that isn't terribly appealing especially in comparison to an academy).

Agreed. I'm behind the Second GP being a GS.

Last few games I've played, I've had:

PBEM 23: First GA on t73, at 79 pop
PBEM 29: First GA on t88, at 105 pop
PBEM 39: First GA on t74 (since players started with a worker though not with anything good for it to do, a better comparison date would be about 5t later, so t79), at 86 pop

Normal speed equivalents would be t110, t132, t119. By comparison, our second prophet if we didn't hire any priests (or, our GS, if we tried to rush it out ASAP to overtake the prophet) would come out t114. That's certainly not inherently problematic.

Sure, there are game-specific factors. This game has higher tech costs, for instance. On the flipside, it's not always war! Diplomacy is fully enabled, which makes everything much gentler. All traits were allowed without penalty, and hey, we are freaking pacal. And, we are (assumed to be) oracling currency, so, there's that. (More generally, we probably have the highest-skill team to ever play a civ game, and we've already executed a great opening so far.)

So I really think that a prophet around t115 could actually be pretty convenient.

Let me do the math. Once we have the following I think we'd be silly not to start our golden age: MoM, Paya, National Epic, Moai Statues, Civil Service. Throwing in IW too, let's see, we need to tech 3420 base beakers. (Yeah, 1200 of that is CS... I wonder if it's worth using the first 5 turns of golden age to grab it.) Suppose that our tech rate completely stagnates after our current micro plan ends, just above 50cpt, for no reason. Well, we will still get all of those techs other than CS over the next 40 turns to t115. And obviously our GNP is not going to stagnate. So yeah, I'm pretty sure that tech-wise we can be ready for a golden age when our 2nd GP arrives.

Now, I won't discount the option of gunning for the scientist in AO, and then once it's popped, working some priests in MM (we could even hire as many as 5, with the shrine), to make up the remaining 100gpp and get our THIRD great person out just a few turns later. So we'd start our golden age with an academy already built. But this seems unnecessary to me. One perk of the golden age will be unlimited scientists producing up to 12gpp each with pacifism and NE, which would make our 35 turns of painful drudgery in AO, to get our academy just a few turns sooner, look incredibly pedestrian.

Edit: Forgot to add 103b for masonry, since we'll hopefully have something to quarry. Doesn't change the outcome, though; that's a 1t tech by t115.

If that was too rambley, here's the short version, now that I've figured things out for myself.

If we start working on that 200gpp scientist immediately after finishing the oracle, then, by the time it comes out, we can probably have access to several or all of: pacifism, caste system, great library, national epic, golden age gpp bonus. And we will be able to pump out a scientist with almost no effort.

Remember, our GProphet is free. Those GPPs are going to happen anyway.

Running 2 scientists is -4 food, and 2 unworked cottages, for thirty four turns. Thirty. Four. God damn, we can run a whip cycle and turn all that food into three settlers and three cities instead. That is a massive opportunity cost.

The GProphet is free. MoM is in our plan anyway. Let's save working specialists for when it costs us much less food (say, during the golden age).

What happens if we do the Mackoti Gamble and build a lib in MM and work scientists on top of the Prophet points?

That's a nicer idea. Either quick GA after MoM, or quick Academy.

Something! Anything! Maybe we should save gold in anticipation of a run for Calendar as the GP/GS pops.

We have a 40% chance of an earlier scientist, and then we have to work a ton more specialists to get our prophet for the golden age in time. And we have a 60% chance of looking like total idiots and having a prophet sit around for an extra 15 turns. And a 100% chance of wasting 90h on a too-early library. nod

Okay, I'm convinced that an early golden age is a good use of the second GP.
Furthermore, I consider that forum views should be fluid in width

Many thanks Seven for the micro explanation. I strongly believe that the current plan is excellent and well thought, but of course I am not an authority in evaluating micro.. We just need to keep an eye on power graphs, since although three axes bring a major improvement into our defence capabilities, we are still running very light.

Regarding great people, I am sure everyone would be happy to receive GS as the 2nd great person, but if I understand it correctly, that is not possible with out significant sacrifices.

However, I do like the "Mackoti Gamble" approach. Let's get some scientist specialists mixing the pool in MM. If we hit GP, let's use it for Golden Age immediately after MoM is chopped. If we get GS, let's build academy and tech Music so that we can launch the GA.
