No one would have believed, in the last years of the
nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds
of space
Finished the game normally, and decided to give a varient a go:
In honour of war of the worlds how long can a lone soldier hold out against an alien invasion?
Normal Ironman, no Tutorial
Complete the first mission as standard, then choose a single soldier.
Sack everybody else and never hire anybody new.
How far can you get solo?

Ill try this.
I really like that med packs make you immune to poison. U til Titan armpit that's gonna be a key thing.
Also if you get the VIP out and your soldier to the exit area you can abort I believe. I've never done it but once I accidentally had a soldier in the exit zone when te VIP got there and it automatically took me to the dust off prompt n

yea ... actually I think I've never cleared a VIP map ... always ended once the VIP got to the CHOPPA
(I start retreating my units with the VIP, and therefore there is usually a soldier near the chopper iirc)

Some VIP maps automatically end when you get the VIP to the chopper but sometimes you're tasked to "Kill all remaining aliens." I haven't been able to figure out what determines whether that is required or not.

It depends on whether you have already killed all the aliens on the map. If the map has been fully swept and cleared, the mission ends. If any aliens remain then you have to go kill them, or else aborting counts as mission failure even if the VIP reached the vehicle.
I learned this on a map where I intentionally left two aliens alive at the far end of the map, because they had a fantastic position behind full cover with the only approach being wide open ground. I thought I was being very clever and just leaving with the VIP, but nope. It's not that simple.
Edit: I am not sure this concept is even remotely viable. There are just too many aliens on most maps for one soldier to handle without getting randomly sniped despite full cover at some point. And how will you handle cyberdisks or sectopods or mind-controlling aliens? It is an interesting variant, but one that is only about how long you last. Victory is impossible.

Oh I agree victory is pretty much not going to happen, just intrigued how far you can get.

Getting through a terror mission with only one soldier is pretty impressive.
Never sell alloys. Never. Just don't do it. Sell corpses, sell navigation computers, maybe even sell power sources if truly utterly desperate. But alloys are so critical for so many things, I never sell them. At least not until you are clearing and salvaging larger UFOs (abductors, supply ships, battleships) on a regular basis, then you finally get enough to start feeling secure.
