Pillaging roads in ones own territory is apparently not allowed. Therefore played turn according to 3b above. RIP Tortuga, may you be revenged swiftly and with much damage. We will still be able to squeeze out 3 axes before M3 can reach Barbados so we are safe from immanent death.

It's time to start planning for the future. If M3 presses on immediately towards Barbados we whip axe when they stand 2SW of Barbados. At that point we will get enough overflow into a second axe before they can attack.
If M3 will give us 20T of peace we can turn research back on for pottery, put up granaries. If no peace then finish enough axes to deter M3 before turning on research again. There's no way we can tech to pikes or maces before they could come at us with elephants so if we want to have some fun we need to strike before then. Here's my quick thoughts:
1) settle a city SE of horses (workboat coming from Port Royal to net fishes). [ purple dot]
2) After settling for horses, another city 3S of Barbados looks alright for a high food/hammers location to crank out an army of axes and go have some fun in M3 lands before they get war elephants. [ blue dot]
3) aim for Horseback Riding next and then turn off research to save gold to support our massive invasion army.
4) forget about cottages and mine those hills
5) build lots of HA's and axes and see if our hoards can overrun M3

Triple post ... Yeah yeah, whatever.
Had another thought ... Remind whoever else borders M3 to claim the ivory between them. But more importantly, but more importantly try to coordinate a small diversion when we decide to put the hammer down in 20-30 turns. Even 3 axes marching on one of their expansion cities in the south would force them to devide their defenses.

That would be Team Gillette, who we do not have contact with but based on map analysis they're already likely very close to the ivory there. That was a large part of why I figured we could make a deal with M3 strictly around ivory as that's probably their biggest reason for not being happy with us..

Actually we just got contact with Gillette this turn (see Gillette's warrior 2SE of Tortuga in the screenshot).

Here's something to start with.
Message to Gillette Wrote:Dear Gillette, we are pleased to note that your warrior reached the shores of our fair city before she was destroyed by the Menagerie Trios (M3, for short).
M3 has decided to run us into the ground, but we assure you that we are not going down without a fight! We have sufficient strength in our core to deter further invasion at this point, but let’s be honest. Our chances of staying competitive long-term are basically nil, and M3 will not even respond to talks of peace. In light of this we have concluded the best/only course of action is to drag them down with us to the grave (err ... Davy Jones’ Locker).
As M3’s second neighbor, it is in your best interest that we remain a thorn in their side as long as possible. We understand that there is little you can do to aid us at the present time, but when we are ready to take the offensive in approximately 15-20 turns you might create a diversion against one of their southern expansion sites and pick off a prize of your own.
We look forward to a future of cooperation and friendship with the Shaven Empire.
Sincerely,
Pirates!

@Cornflakes: I don't think we should just throw our entire empire at M3. Burning down Tortuga wasn't that bad. Assuming we get peace, I think we should rebuild, research Construction and Horse Archers, and use massive stacks of Catapults to keep ourselves safe.
I don't know, maybe I'm just not spiteful enough.
