That's fine by me Cornflakes. We will need to find a few more people first.
PBEM46 tech thread

I would caution against compromising with the turn pace, the game is far more enjoyable if everybody is committed to 1t/day and able to maintain it. If someone is less reliable, having a dedlurker willing to fill in on occasion is good solution.
Hi guys, I'm interested in a PBEM - hopefully I can do a turn a day, but as I haven't played one before, I can't guarantee it. How many players are you looking for?
Completed: RB Demogame - Gillette, PBEM46, Pitboss 13, Pitboss 18, Pitboss 30, Pitboss 31, Pitboss 38, Pitboss 42, Pitboss 46, Pitboss 52 (Pindicator's game), Pitboss 57
In progress: Rimworld
From personal experience, 4 is a lot safer than 5 or 6. Both in terms of risking someone having to drop out and in terms of being able to maintain 1t/day. Harry, do you have a 6h window where you know you're highly likely to be available? Like during the evening. A rhythm tends to develop where you know when to expect the save, you won't typically be required to play at all different kinds of hours.
If you need a player to fill up the roster, I'll put my hand up. But I'm happy to sit out if someone else is available and wants to play.
Well I'll normally be able to play 1900-0100 GMT but might be drunk sometimes. I could also play in the morning 0700-0900 GMT if it gets to me late.

If we can get to a nearly 1 turn / day pace (via catwalk helping Cornflakes - and sometimes simply missing a turn, and Old Harry not driking as much (bad for your health anyway)) I'd be up for another game.
In that case, the roster would be Lego Cornflakes (ded.lurker + helping turn-player in case of need: catwalk) Old Harry Azza Serdoa That would be a fine number. I personally think that 4 is too less and 6 too much. But the following would need to be decided (and really for the next time, a proposal in the opening post is the best way to do this, so that you'll already get people interested in a similar game as you) a) Diplo: - full diplo - AI diplo (proposals via trade screen in game, no talking) - Always War (AW) I am in favor of AI-diplo, followed by AW. I'm out in case of full diplo (or some variant of it catwalk ), simply because I don't have the time for writing emails or discussing agreements. b) Bans? - Nukes yes / no? - War Elephants yes / no? - Corporations yes / no? - Statue of Zeus yes / no? Yes to all of those bans from me. I don't see anything of those particularly fun, though I'd really only insist on WEs, because they screw up the whole ancient / medieval warfare. c) Civ / Leader Bans? Possibilities: No Fin, No Exp, No India, Inca, Byzantinum, No Bans at all I'm for no bans but if possible a variant as described below. But I don't really care strongly either way. d) Picking Method? - Snake Pick - Reversed Turn Order - Point Buy Reversed Turn Order if no bans, Snake Pick or Reversed Turn Order in case of the below described variant. Point Buy ... well, thats basically a variant in itself and depends on the map maker as well (I think 45 did that, right?) e) Variants? In general that would mean finding a map maker who is willing to spice up the game by giving us boni / mali on the surroundings depending on starting techs and additional buildings or other goodies depending on traits. The idea is to bring starting techs and traits on more equal footing, so that FIN/EXP is not the best combo available. It can be seen used in PBEM32, but we can only do that if we find an experienced map maker (Seven?) to do that for us. f) Map-Type? I would strongly suggest using Sevens Mirror-Map. It will create a 40x40 toroidal map with all 5 players being equidistant to every other player and having the same map mirrored 5 times. That gives in my opinion a much fairer game and gives everyone the same opportunities. g) I certainly have forgot stuff, please fill in here
That looks like a pretty good roster, I know Azza is reliable. If all 4 are ready to play, we need to figure out game settings and playing order. I'll stay out of that discussion, but I'd like to help it get started. So all who are ready, please answer the following:
1) Do you have any strong preferences about game settings? 2) What is your time zone and at what times can you typically play? EDIT: Crossposted with Serdoa.
That looks good to me. I agree with all of Serdoa's votes. My best time to play would be in the evening (UK) or early morning. I can play a turn a day no problem. Thanks to all of you for the opportunity of a game.
Skill: Any chance a veteran or two want to sign up as dedlurkers? With Serdoa on the roster, the skill level just took a jump
Picking: I know I said I'd butt out of setup discussions, but I really like double reverse snake pick with a point buy system. The 45 system was the most balanced and varied so far IMO, and I also like not needing bans. Diplo: I'm actually pretty flexible about diplo systems, I just like having variety. AW suits me fine in PBEM42, I like how little time it takes. I do think that green player should have a chance to try a diplo at some point, so they don't get used to non-talking being the only way to play here. Size: 40x40 is a pretty big map, will lead to a very builder focused game. I'm not against that, just want to make sure that all players approve. |
