PBEM47 Technical Thread

Obviously not joining, but just wanted to say I see no issue with setting skill preferences or wanting people who aren't recovering slow turnplayers and the like.

Appreciate that others agree with my general thoughts on game formation, as I said, really more about setting expectations.

Re: my skill level - I don't think I underestimate myself, I think I'm good enough to lose competitively with just about everyone on the site but Seven and mackoti. There's another dozen or two players I'd say are clearly better than me but I feel confident enough I can give them a game, which is all that matters in my estimation.

Re: map, let's see what everyone wants when we have a full game.

Like I said, I'm not in a huge rush to get this started so I'll just leave it open and see who is interested. If there's a game in there, great. If not, NBD.

Damn, I'm extremely interested in challenging the "vets" that are already associated with this game. However, I am aware that I probably have to prove my skill level first before I meet the entry criteria, which btw are totally understandable.

I'll follow whether you get a guaranteed vets game up and see if my girlfriend would murder me if I spend even more time with civ..
Finished:
PBEM 45G, PB 13, PB 18, PB 38 & PB 49

Top 3 favorite turns:

Novice and kjn, heck Zak when engaged, mean that we fear micro-oriented Scandinavians, however green.
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.

I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.

Do you want to team up with me, Fintourist? I need a partner who can play some turns for me, especially on weekends. And also to stop me from doing anything too crazycrazyeye.

Alright, I went ahead and added all the maybes to the signup list, though I'm not sure how many maybes equals actual signups, so I added a couple spots so maybe out of 6-7 possibles we find enough for an actual game.

As far as SevenSpirits - I'll confess that you're pretty much at the top of the list of people I don't really want to see in a PBEM given that you're pretty well the consensus best or second best player on the site and your competition for that spot isn't active at the moment. I'll also confess that giving you a handicap like Tokugawa of Germany or something feels both artificial and immaterial - I'd rank you as the favorite if you were playing as Dan Quayle of America from Ruff's mod for that Adventure and it also seems a bit cheesy. That said I also think its kind of lame that you have a hard time getting a game just because you're better than everyone else.

That said assuming luddite's playing I'm easily the worst player who has signed up for this so far anyway, so I'm not sure it matters all that much. I guess I'd prefer to let us get to "full" and then have all the participants decide how they want to handle player caliber rather than be a dictator in a game I'm not remotely expecting to win anyway. Like I said, this game proposal was mostly about wanting a save in my inbox regularly again. Still, it won't be a lot of fun to have a game if I'm out of it on Turn 50 which is what usually happens when I wade in this particular talent pool.

Gaspar, if you want a teammate, I volunteer to be your green Scandinavian micro geek.
If you know what I mean.

While I agree that Seven is probably the best player on the site, I'm not sure that the difference of (perceived) skill is greater than other games that have been run here where the favorite didn't win. PB6 springs immediately to mind for instance. I'd say Speaker/Sunrise/Sulla were bigger favorites going into that game that Seven would be with the way the current lineup is looking (mostly because the lineup so far looks quite strong) and we know how that wound up.

I don't want to turn the game into a referendum on Seven - he's really awesome, let's leave it at that.

I'm happy to have you along, zak. And WK as well if you're still interested, I realized I hadn't actually responded to that. I can promise regular updates and plenty of opportunities to mock my bad decisions. And we'll probably spend some quality time insulting NobleHelium even if he isn't signing up to play this one. smile
